Video Conversions and Formats

Hello,
I have a ton of videos in all shapes, formats and sizes and would really like to get them into one common format and in the best quality as possible.

I don;t fully understand what each format is and differences and information about videos setups.

Could someone give me a short snappy insight into formats and the videos encoders and how best to get each of my videos into one common format and which may be best.

Transcoding them into the same format will waste time and reduce quality. Just get a codec pack and don't worry about the format.
