Video converter/editing soft

Hi

I am looking for a good and preferably cheap video converting software, from AVI to any 720p/1080p format which can be used on youtube.
If possible with some editing options, like cutting, merging etc.
I can spend up to 50£ on it.

Yeah, I should have mentioned.
It have to work well with youtube.
HandBrake doesn't

I wasted 3 hours converting video and uploading it. It was 1080p on my desktop and went down to 360p in youtube

I think one of my friends mentioned youtube uses FLV format.
I ned something that can make good quality movies in FLV, or maybe I am doing this wrong?
How do you upload good quality movies to youtube so they stay that way? I am thinking 720p would be good, 1080p fantastic

And Like I said in first thread this doesn't have to e free software.

PS. What do I do in Avidemux to actually convert the video to different size/file format?
I have set the input an output file, fiters and cant find the magic button that sais 'start'.

Thanks a lot guys, after 4 hours managed to convert and upload the video to Youtube, even with 1080p quality so I am very happy.

I found HandBrake to be the easiest for me to use after all and it was easy to upload it to youtube, took only 4 hours total for 15 minute video, lol.
