video convertor software recomendation

im looking for software to convert video files to avi so they'll play on my sons tv usb thing. any recomendations on what one to use.

Handbrake - free too!

I've been using Any Video Converter with no issues and for the same purpose. Works perfectly!

last time i used handbrake, it didn't support avi - only mp4.

Handbrake only supports converting to MP4 and MKV.

Do you know what this USB device is?

yea its his tv its an lg it supports avi but doesnt support mp4

Oh so it's an LG TV that supports USB flash drives?

EDIT: Searching around it seems older LG TVs only supported AVI but even then codec support seems a bit low.

I suppose you could give Avidemux a go, I remember using that to quickly edit videos. Not sure if it's still supported and there's probably better converters out there.

MeGUI will beat Handbrake every time, not the easiest program to use though.

Just buy a cheap media player thing and use HDMI.

Built in USB is usually crap in comparison.

Won't need to convert anything

X Media Recode. Supports bloody everything. I find myself remuxing things to mp4 for my apple TV, transcoding DNX HD QT for work, comp'ing AC3s. Endless possibilities and it's free!
