Hi all,

Recently started doing videography and seriously lacking computer power, so will be using Black Friday discounts this weekend to buy parts for a self build. Any help and advice appreciated :)
How does this look like ? Is everything compatible ? Is that enough thermal paste? Am I missing anything from the list?
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 3.7Ghz
  • CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U14S, Premium CPU Cooler with NF-A15 140mm Fan (Brown)
  • Motherboard: MSI AMD Ryzen AM4 B350 GAMING PLUS ATX Motherboard
  • RAM: VULCAN T-FORCE 32GB (2X16GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C14 2400MHZ DUAL CHANNEL KIT
  • SSD: Kingston a400 480GB SSD
  • HDD: Toshiba P300 3TB 3.5'' SATA HDD @ 7200rpm
  • GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 OC V1
  • Case: Bitfenix NOVA MIDI TOWER CASE - WHITE WINDOW
  • PSU: LEADEX GOLD 550W FULLY MODULAR '80 PLUS GOLD' POWER SUPPLY - GUNMETAL
  • OS: Windows 10 Home 64bit
  • Thermal paste: HYDRONAUT HIGH PERFORMANCE THERMAL PASTE - 26 GRAMS 10 ML
  • Case fans: I have no idea if needed. The case has one rear fan. Do I need front fans too?
Thanks in advance !

whats your budget ? what programs are you using ?

please please consider Davinci Resolve as its mainly free and will USE all the hardware power it can get unlike Adobe's. Friend did the Morrisons advert with the program and ryzen 8 core and gtx 1080ti , did a better job then his older more expensive mac .

got a higher budget and will use Resolve, then push higher GPU, 1080ti

I was looking for £1000-1100 budget with all included hence went for the 1060 GPU.
And I would actually be trying out both Davinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere pro to understand the differences of their editing workflows.

What is the benefit of using the Motherboard, PSU and CPU cooler you've suggested vs the ones I had in initial list?

cheers

B450 boards are built better then b350 , but still not as solid as X370 and X470 for VRM - which are handy if running 8 cores , overclocked and heavy workloads

Board also has UK RMA

for Adobe Prem- Intel still holds the lead for Live Playback, Export and overall score. Though 2700x doesn't do to badly .

I also selected wrong CPU, should have been the 1700x as it doesn't come with a cooler and clocks faster

RAM is the key bit. the ram speeds defines how quickly the two cores within the CPU share information with each other . so 3000 is the sweet spot , unless our rocking a flagship X370/470 then can push ram speeds.
you can lose good 10-20% performance with using 2400hz over 3000hz ram with ryzen

heads up, RX 580 also has same performance as gtx 1060 and costs cheaper along with 2 free games along with it.
If using Resolve, Vega 56/64 can match Nvidia gtx 1070-1080 performance , with colour grading its on par with 1080ti...

common ground

Thank you very much! Going for the B450 with the 3000Mhz RAM with the Ryzen 7 1800x - great suggestions and will look into the the GPU you suggested in more detail in a bit!
