Hey guys, I'm relatively new to computer purchasing, just wanted to get some opinions on what sort of spec. I can get for that budget. No monitor is required either I should add.

I'm aware I need a large hard drive and a good amount of RAM, but I'm not sure about the CPU or GPU.

Any help or feedback would really be appreciated

Shveen

do you need a keyboard, mouse, speakers or a copy of windows/or other OS

any bits you already have that can be re-used? dvd rewriter?

Just the base unit?

but,

keyboard and mouse and win7

quad core cpu.

8gb or ram

SSD to run windows and your video editing program

just use the onboard gpu for your display.

I read it as he needs keyboard, mouse and windows because hes starting from scratch.

although it also reads the other way too.

That's a point though, i'm not sure how much video editing can utilize the GPU. The Graphics Card i specced is relatively high end, it may be worth looking into dropping it down a few notches (say £60?) and spending the rest on a better CPU.

You want the best CPU and hard disks you can afford. Graphics dont really matter, unless encoding can now be properly offloaded as well as decoding, but I don't think it has as a mature product yet.

  • Budget £550
  • Video editing computer needed

Hey shveen,

didn't add in a keyboard or mouse but these can be picked up quite cheaply! . . . So basically you got a HexCore processor with 4GB Memory and 2x 1TB Hard disks or a HexCore with 8GB memory and 1TB hard disk! :D

Couple of people on these forums hate the OCZ gold memory in spec #2 but its worked fine for me . . if you have any doubts speak to the people at the OcUk shop and ask them if there is a problem . . .

Noy sure which of the two builds would work best for you . . . less memory and more disk space or more memory and less diskspace? . . . either way both builds are *killer* for the money £££ . . . have fun choosing!

if he doesn't need a copy of windows, keyboard and mouse, take your build,

then just swap the 460gpu for a cheaper 9800gt so you still have the benefits of CUDA acceleration in video editing apps if they can use it, and dump a hex core CPU in.

win win.

I use premier pro CS4 - This software makes little / no use of the GTX 260, so I say go budget on the GPU £30 entry level job will do it.

However premier pro maxs out my Core i5 750 - looking at benchmarks the entry level 6 core AMD's do well.

HDD drive speed is semi important, but my Samsung F2's manage ok, and not half as important as CPU power.

Memory 4GB will be ok, providing no other semi heavy apps are running.

The spec's from BigWayne look a good match.
