Hi Overclockers,

I am currently working on a video project using adobe software. As the project files get bigger, navigating through the footage and using the software gets laggy and render time increases (as I have come to expect). I can deal with it but I was wondering if there were any cheap options for giving my system a boost in the appropriate place.

Its getting on a bit now but this is what I'm using:

Core2 Duo E4600 2.4Ghz
4GB DDR2
Radeon HD 3870

I don't know much more than this, The Components were not bottom of the range at the time of purchace, I think the ram was a nice OCZ twinned pair too.

I don't remember what motherboard I am using, only that it is a Gigabit one. I don't know if it would take 8gb ram, or how well I could utilize an extra 4gb anyway (I will find out if it can take more this evening).

I can afford £300 which is probably slap bang in the middle of being too much to spend on upgrades for an old machine and too little to buy a new system altogether.

Any ideas? Tips?

Couple of options here working within your budget. SSD is out the window as they are expensive in terms of price v capacity (and with video editing I would imagine you need lots of space).

I would probably pickup a 2nd hand Q6600 and Overclock it, coupled with another 4GB of RAM if your board supports this amount. After that you could probably get a small SSD in there but im not sure how much benefit this would be if your working with large video files? What kind of HDD are you using at present?

Actually I didnt even think about the hard disks being a problem. I have 4 internal SATA 7200rpm drives of varying sizes (3 of which are full), the operating system and software is installed on one of these. But the current project fies are all on an external 1TB USB2 drive (recent WD bog standard thing, not SSD). I do like to have plenty of space, I have a bad habit of archiving all renders and never deleting them.

That bundle looks quite nice, and my graphics card would still fit. Just want to be sure I will see a noticable difference (apart from making the inside of my case more shiny :)

That's a decent bundle there mate and well within budget. Would make your system a lot more responsive. Wait and see what the other forum members suggest but I think that i3 bundle is great value for the budget you have in mind ;)

I am swinging the way of the overclocked bundles now. I didn't realise overclockers sold these nice pre tweaked packages. It would be useful to understand the difference between all the packages swiming around the £260 - £280 area. I cant really tell them apart, the tech specs have subtle differences in motherboard brand and such - just wish it said why one was better than the other in description rather than putting the same things like "power through with ease", "superb performance" on every page

These ones are branded under OCUK's 'Argon' range:

£275.98:

This one is branded 'Radon' by OCUK and is still in the same price range, that means it should be better right... or not? Should I be afraid of AMD for some reason?

Perhaps I need to post this one in a new thread... Or perhaps I should stop moaning and spend some time reading pc component articles. Oh the bore!
