Hi folkes,

I'm looking at making a PC for Video editing. My budget is approx £1500. Should I get a Quadro? I know they are suitable for CAD work, but are they suitable for video editing or would I be better getting a high power gaming GPU?

Thanks.

I think you'd be better with a gaming card, the Quadros are designed for 3D modeling and CAD stuff.

Someone may come along and make me look like and idiot but Im fairly sure a quadro is not what you want.

No CS4 will use the Quadro card for H264 exports and CS5 will use the cards for rendering and exports.

But Quadro is very expensive; for £1500 buy a GTX295 with as much memory as possible and 3 different disk setup.

the reason the quadro cards are also good at video editing is the CUDA support.

The normal gamer nvidia cards also support this feature so are also fast at encoding too, the new nvidia 400 series of cards is released on friday which will do it too.

There are plenty of video demonstrations on youtube from ADOBE and other software developers showing the improvements of nvidia CUDA over a fast CPU.

I agree with J.B., but am about as sure as he is. I don't believe quadros accelerate video editing any better than geforce cards. Another issue is that a quadro will eat your entire budget by itself if you want one with newer hardware than an 8800GT, e.g. the fx3700 cost 650 quid last time I checked and is very nearly identical to an 8800GT.

You probably want to spend the money on processors, and get a token gpu so you can have something on the screen. What software are you using to edit video, as it probably states somewhere if it can be accelerated by graphics cards or not?

edit: Beaten, and beaten badly :(
I'm surprised a 295gtx is justified in this context.

Thanks chaps. They are using CS4. So, I need to find out if they use H264 exports or CUDA ? If so then it might be worth pushing the pudget to include something like an FX3800?

For CS4 you need the Elemental Accelerator plugin and this will export H264 files. You need a quadro fx card but check the website for full details.

CS5 looks like its getting very clever. The Photoshop auto content aware fill makes several years of photoshop practice somewhat redundant :(
