Video editing - picture size problem

Hi guys,

I'm trying to correct the size of this video (see pic) which has been created with a picture size of 832*468. I've done a bit of Googling and I'd like to resize the video to 720*404 - which I gather is an acceptable format for viewing on a 16:9 TV?

So far I've tried Handbrake and Freemake - both the DVDs (one original size, one new size) I've created display the same way as in the picture

Am I doing something wrong?

They are effectively the same aspect, both are 16:9. It looks like your TV is overscanning.

Is it hooked up to your PC with a HDMI cable per chance? If so you'll need to correct the TV, not the video file.

edit: I should add - when I say correct the TV, you should have some options in your GPU menu to adjust the resolution/positioning of the image to avoid this issue.

Nope, not watch through an HDMI cable - playing the disc on my DVD player via scart

Ps. I've tried different DVD/TV setups and the issue remains.

Although you aren't watching in the way I have suggested, as you are using a DVD player and TV, it's still sounds like it's going to be an overscan issue.

I assume you can play the files on your computer and the full frame appears?

It sounds like the way these files have been captured, the safe area around the edge has been cut off by the recording device, and so when the image is played back, it overscans as normal, without the addition safe area to keep the picture in place.

How were the files acquired/recorded?

Isn't there an option for Display Area under Settings\Setup\Screen Settings? You'd need to select Full Pixel in order to defeat over-scanning.

Yup, the files play fine with Media Player/VLC. The vid was captured with get_iplayer - a cheeky little app that allows me to catchup with stuff from the Beeb outside of their fairly ridged time constraints online

Given that this is the case then you will probably have to find a way to edit the videos with a black border around them to cover the overscan space... if I were you I would just put up with the way it is as that sounds like a PITA to have to keep doing.

Yeah, for the effort involved for something that I will probably only view once and then get rid of, you're absolutely right
