Hi all,

Not been keeping up to speed with hardware for last few years as still happy with my XP3200 rig I built with parts from OCUK a few years back.

I want to start using Adobe Premiere though for video editing, and it requires a CPU that can support SSE2 instructions so it looks like upgrade time! With not keeping up to speed I'd welcome comments on the following rig i'm looking at;

In general it'll be a quad core system, with 8GB memory and running Vista (64bit).

Processor - Intel Core2 Quad - either Q6600 or Q9450 - not 100% sure overclocking a rig that is going to be doing video encoding for long periods.

Mobo - open to suggestions on this one as the choice is a bit overwhelming! HELP!

Graphics - 8800 GTS - Maybe the Asus model, I can always add another further down the line to SLI and increase performance - so mobo will need to be compatible!

Memory - again, open to suggestions given the choice - needs to be a total of 8GB for editing purposes - the 8GB options I've seen are normally 4*2GB so mobo will need to cope with this!

Storage - Maxtor Diamond Max 22 - 500GB SATA II drives - either two in a RAID 0 or possibly four in RAID 5 (can current mobo's support these options or am I better looking at a seperate card?)

Case/PSU - Antec Sonata III - have the original sonata and liked it - i'm not looking for massive cooling and i don't want lots of noise when i'm sat going over video footage! But will this case/psu cope with the above components!?

Monitor - Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP 24" - should be able to fit all that adobe information onto the screen!

Concerns;

Not an 'avid' gamer but do play now and again - my XP3200/Geforce6800 will happily play most titles at max settings at 1280*1064 - but will the GTS8800 be able to run games such as HL2 at a res of 1920*1200 on the Dell widescreen monitor!?

Any info/guidance on the about would really be appreciated!

Thanks,

Justin.

Do you have set budget?

Maximum £1500 i reckon - don't want to go overboard! My current rig cost a similar amount 3 years ago and it's now worth peanuts! :)

Looking for best bang for buck sort of setup! Decent performance, good value!

:)

A few random comments:

* I think the new 4850 is better than the 8800GTS and about the same price. I'm pretty sure both would run HL2 at that res with ease!
* If you want bang for the buck go for the Q6600 (~£125) not the Q9450 (~£210)
* Maybe have a look at the Samsung F1 hard drives.
* Motherboards are a bit of a mystery to me as well, but the Asus P5Q might be a good option....
* Memory is even more of a mystery to me so I'm not even going to attempt to suggest something.

Well I'm looking at getting the following for my g/f very soon and she uses it mainly for graphics ( 3ds max etc )

1 x Corsair HX 620W Modular PSU - ATX12V v2.2 APFC £68.00

1 x Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Energy Efficient 95W edition Socket 775 (2.40GHz) G0 Stepping L2 8MB Cache OEM Processor £104.67

1 x Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 Processor Cooler £13.29

1 x Sapphire HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI TV Out PCI-E Graphics Card £106.34

1 x Sony DRU-190S 20X DVD±RW DL & DVD-RAM Serial ATA - Retail Multi Bezel & Nero £14.42

1 x OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB) 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory Platinum Performance CL5 (5-4-4-18) £54.69

1 x Asus P5Q PRO P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard £74.69

Comes to just over £500 and seems a pretty good speced PC.

This is what i've got so far.

I'm guessing the SATA-II drives are backwards compatible with the SATA motherboard (told you I'd been away a while!)

:)

The 3 drives to start off with is good but personally I'd forget about putting in a RAID config. Use 1 for the OS, 1 for the source video and 1 for the output/encoded video. You could then at a later date add more drives and RAID 0 either/or/both the source and output/encoded drives.

I was thinking more for redundancy than anything else - but might also work, I'll probably get an external drive for backing up digital video clips...

Can anyone confirm if all the above components will fit in the sonata case? And if the power supply is up to the job?

Cheers,

J.
