i want to shorten a video a tad
can someone recommend a bit of software, that is easy to use to do this

could try windows live movie maker (it's part of ms live package). It's free

Virtualdub

You won't even need to re-encode

Press 'Home' on the timeline where you want it to start, and press 'End' where you want it to finish

Set the Video to 'Direct Stream Copy' and set that Audio to that too.

Now tap F7 and save it

virtualdub for some filetypes but nandub for others. Some video codecs will not be supported and you will have to look for a specific application for that purpose for that codec.
