Right so I normally use my phone for recording video but I keep on running into problems with it so I am investigating buying a camera of some sorts.

First of all I know nothing about what is good in a camera so be gentle :p.

Basically I want a camera that will be capable of recording high quality (HD really) video for use recording sports and lifting videos for coaching and general tracking of progress. My thought is that I may require one with a decent frame rate (?) for this. Most of the time it will be used in the gym which doesn't have the best lighting but will also be used outside, mainly on the river. The footage, apart form general use, will also be used in movement tracking software so it needs to be clear so that the subject can be easily distinguishable from the surroundings. Also it will mainly be used in the hand so the videos may be a little shaky, I don't know if this is something that can be resolved with a better camera. I would like it to have to ability to connect to a tripod/holderer if possible. With regards to audio, I am not overly fussed, the video quality is much more important.

Ideally I want to spend as little money as possible so the cheaper the better, but it must be able to perform to the standard needed. Let's say my budget is <£80, but as I said I don't know much about cameras so I'm not sure how much that will buy me.

My phone meets my needs in terms of taking photo's so it is not a must to have a camera with a great photo capability, however if it is just as convenient it seems silly to avoid it. It might be quite nice to have a decent digital camera should my phone suffer a hiccup or I decide it is no longer sufficient.

My question comes in two parts. Firstly, will I be able to accomplish this with a standard digital camera that's primary function is being able to take photographs? Secondly, can you suggest the best camera for the job?

Here is a example of the kind of video that will be shot in the gym, with not the best lighting:

Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks for your time :).

For that money, go to a shop, find whichever camera you like the look of best for your budget and buy it. Not really much in it with cheaper compacts.

£80 will not get you something pukka, but you can get a Canon SX230 for around £99 and its good.

I figured that £80 isn't a huge amount and it isn't the maximum that I would be willing to spend it's just that I'd rather not pay a huge amount for things I don't need. For instance, the GPS on the SX230, but I did find that the only difference between that and the SX220 is that the SX220 doesn't have the GPS and it makes it a little cheaper. Going to around £100 is fine as long as I'm paying for something better.

Again, I appreciate the help :).
