Video Playback on TV

My mate recorded a video on his Mobile. We copied it to a dvd but it won't play on a dvd player attached to a TV. Plays fine on the PC. The DVD was a DVD-r. What can we do to get it to play?

need to convert it to dvd format, not simply copy to a dvd

nero can encode to dvd, not sure if there's free software for it

VSO convertxtodvd. Brilliant software, not sure if its free anymore though.
