Video playback stutters in COD4 - GPU faulty?

Just installed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on my Vista 64 rig .

I can run the game fine at 2560x1200, however the video playback of the startup logo, cutscenes etc all stutter very badly, like every second or so (both video and audio).

If I reduce the resolution setting in COD4 to 1900x1200, the delay between the stutter increases to 2 seconds. Reducing the resolution further will reduce the stutter interval.

I've tried reducing the sound quality to low and stereo.

My thoughts were that this is a codec issue. I've installed RAD Video Tools, which allows me to browse to the game's video folder and playback the movies via Windows Explorer (without the game) and that works fine.

The only thing that works is disabling catalyst AI, which effectively disables crossfire. I'm beginning to think there is a fault with one of my 4870x2 cards. If they weren't watercooled, I would test further by swaping them around etc.

Anybody had similar experiences?

(Specs: i7 920, 6Gb RAM, dual 4870x2 cards, Soundblaster X-Fi)

I am not sure if this helps but I had a very similar problem with Empire Total War on my old rig. It would stutter on all cutscenes yet everything else media-wise would play fine.

I think it's probably software related: drivers or settings in Windows. I am still using the graphics card and everything is fine now, this might be a postive sign in terms of the health of your cards.
