Video Playout Box

I'm trying to spec up a video playout box which will play DV files fullscreened on the TV-out on a graphics card (haven't decided on the card yet). Now, I've looked at mplayer and that seems perfectly capable of playing back these files, but my question is, what OS would be the best at doing this? Currently I am trying to decide between FreeBSD and CentOS, leaning slightly towards CentOS for no real reason. Secondly, how would I get mplayer to play on a second output? Do I need to install X? I then plan to build a web interface in Perl to pass commands to it to control playback, but that's outside the scope of this thread - unless something's already available to save me all the coding.

Thanks

CentOS is more for server stuff - I wouldn't use it as a desktop OS.

Fedora might be a better choice.

This isn't a desktop system, it's not a MythTV style box, it's going to sit in a rack and play videos and be controlled by a web scheduling system.
