Video recording and editing

Hi. A couple of weeks ago I decided that I wanted to try and record some CS:GO gameplay using dxtory(I've considered other programs but this one in particular seems to have one of the best recording qualitys using the lagarith lossless codec which makes the videos take up a lot of HDD space but the quality is flawless).

Now since I intend to edit said videos and render them later on the file size isn't an issue to me the problem is sometimes altough I'm not lagging ingame(sometimes I do but only slightly hardly noticeable) but the video I recorded has some lag. In some parts none in other parts nothing major and sometimes it's rly laggy.

These are my computer specs:
Win7 Ultimate SP1
AMD FX-6200 (overclocked to 4.7ghz)
AMD 990FX
4x Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3/4GX (total of 16 GB)
Sapphire HD 7970 Vapor-X
Asus ML248 [24" LCD]

And then I got 3 HDD 1 external of 3TB USB 3.0 from iomega(not the best when you are trying to write data I just use it for storing media), an SSD OCZ-AGILITY3 ATA Device (SATA-III) and a 1TB WD Sata II internal HDD which is where I'm trying to write the data on because I believe it's the most apropriate(the SSD isn't full but it's only 120GBs and if I happen to want to record for 1 hour in lagarith lossless codec the filesize will surely be over 200GBs.

Now I've got a couple of questions and I apologise for the long post but I'm just trying to let you in on everything.

First of all I think that my computer specs should sufice to record CS:GO in 1080p(some of the settings aren't even at maximum) anyways if you think otherwise please let me know and let me know what should I improve(I do know my cpu right now is the weakest element on my computer).

Second of all if my computer is able to handle said task then what is wrong and what can I change for example changing Video card configuration. I actualy got 1 question regarding that. I've never messed with the pixel format (YCbCr 4:4:4;YCbCr 4:2:2;RGB(limited) 4:4:4;RGB 4:4:4) now I do know is related with color my question is I've been using YCbCr 4:4:4 since forever but will any of the others improve my fps or anything that can help me record?

As for Dxtory settings in the movie tab I've set video codec to lagarith lossless codec; Framerates 29,97(I searched the web for a while and saw a lot of people saying it was better than a static 30 fps because it would decrease lag and I tested it myself and noticed some improvement with that);File Output "Check";File Format AVI And scaling 100% and all the remaining settings on movie tab are either unchecked or set to default(0)
Then the only other setting that I changed was in the advanced tab where I set Processing Threads to 6. Nothing else that seems related to the video itself.

Now I'm not putting my CS:GO settings here just because I know there are very few people that play it right now so I don't think it will help you helping me solving whatever the problem is but if you think otherwise I will be happy to put them here as well.

Thank you for your time.

Here's some useful information and hardware performance:

Alright meanwhile I've been doing some tests and doing some reading on the subject and so far what I've figured out is that if I record with the exact same settings that I've previously said I have no lag ingame but the video is realy laggy.

And if I use those exact same settings but change the scaling/size to 1280*720p I don't lag ingame like before the video isn't lagging(which was the issue with the first settings) but the quality is pretty much junk. I've seen people with worse computers using the same program and recording games like battlefield 3(which requires a way better computer) and they didn't have the lag or the crappy quality.

When you say the video's lagging on playback I assume that's the uncompressed file and/or the preview in your editing program?

Some editors (Vegas for example) allow a reduced viewing resolution for the preview to help combat this, but even then lag can still occur.

This doesn't necessarily mean, however, that the lag will be visible in your final rendered product. Have you tried a render to see if the final product is lagging also?

I get a lot of lag watching uncompressed and in the preview when dealing with both large size files and very action/movement heavy content. However after the rendering process the results are lag free.

I have been recording with fraps for a good while and it seems hit an miss what games run fine and what games lag terribly. I tried DXTORY before but could not get any better results, though I don't think I tried lagarith.

Where is the bottleneck with recording from fraps etc? I seem to see people with OK spec outputting 1080p & 60fps with no prob.

SSD vs HDD seemed to make no difference. Currently using a FX4100 & 560ti, but building a new 3770K + 7970 tonight, I gather I'll have an easier time recording with that setup?

I always gathered it was CPU bound.

Thanks :)

yea it's the uncompressed file but I just realised what was wrong the video wasn't actualy lagging and the problem wasn't it being uncompressed the thing is apparently for some reason when I play the uncompressed clip on WMP it runs fine but WMP isn't my default media display program and for some reason VLC lags when I try to play it. I only realised this when I tried to use WMP instead.

Anyways do you know anything regarding my other question?

I'm curious because I actualy tried to record with YV12 or YU12 something like that on Dxtory and the record was just filled with a lot of colors like a rainbow or something and all messed up.

Anyways everything is perfectly fine now got stable 120 fps playing while recording and the record isn't laggy so all good :D ty

This is an issue with VLC not the recording, if you try watching the video in MPC-HC it isn't an issue.

Thanks for that info didn't know about that :) Altough I've experienced some videos in the past not playing in VLC didn't think that was the problem until I tried it on WMP. Anyways regarding pixel format what would you recommend for gaming? or for the recording itself. I've searched the web but didn't find much useful information because everyone just keeps saying different things

It's all down to personal choice in my opinion because it's down to which software you prefer to use the most, at the moment i am using MSI Afterburner for recording since it's free and easy to use as for my settings i use the lagarith lossless codec which is setup to use YV12 and multithreading, as for my other settings i have to set to record in 720p with no video compression.

For editing i use Virtualdub to cut clips out of the video that i don't want in and handbrake for encoding the video.

I use FRAPS for capturing if its recording replays via recorded demo or spectating, etc. and MSI Afterburner for capturing live gameplay.
