what's with all these videos I've tried to watch recently that want me to go and download the codec and are DRM'd? VLC throws a fit....any idea how to remove it or if I decide to let windows media player download it's stuff am I likely to cause myself more grief?

Are these videos either porn or movie rips?, if so, to quote Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski: "You are about to enter a world of pain son."
If the movies are legitimate... completely legit then you can go ahead and download the DRM mechanism, otherwise run like the clucking fappers.

got a link? (to a video that it asks you to download something)
If WMP asks you to download the codec usually it does it itself. When I watched iplayer videos on it I had to download some license files for it to work.

I've deleted them...however it just appears erm dodgy. It's a fresh install to an SSD and I'm pretty happy with how fast it is, so I'm not going to download an .exe to watch something I'm not particularly bothered about. Can't even remember where I got said clips from to be honest!

You wouldn't be able to watch anything even if you did download the executable. It's a well known scam.
