I recently noticed that videos I try and play are not fitting the screen correctly. There seems to be an inch or so missing from the top and bottom of the screen.

It happens using VLC, Windows media player and Winamp.

I recently upgraded my gfx card to a 5850 and it definately wasnt doing it before the upgrade. My usual desktop screen and games seem fine.

Here are a couple of examples :

Any ideas how I can fix this ?

Thanks in advance.

look in your ati catalyst options, for something like overscan or similar, i dont know why ati cards seem to have this wrong by default a lot of the time :S

I cant find that option anywhere but wouldnt that put my desktop view out of sync if I changed it ? It's only the video that seems to be affected.

hmm yeah thats a good point, very weird indeed, it wont be overscan then because as you said thatd mess with your whole desktop, its got to be in the ati video options though, defo not a media player or vlc option :S, dont have an ati card so cant be much help =/

No worries, I'm hoping it's just certain videos that do it dependent on their frame height and width. I cant really tell though unless the title screens fall within the areas that are missed out.

Looking at the preview icons of the videos though they appear to be the same, missing out areas at the top and bottom, which leads me to believe it must be the actual video files that are in the incorrect format for widescreen ? Surely the preview icons at least should display correctly if it's an error with the cards playback settings ?

Gah I'm completely stumped. I'm sure it was never like this with my old Nvidia card. I've tried everything and about 10 different videos and the top and bottom is cut off in all of them.

I'm using Windows 7, I've tried using Klite codec pack but no difference. Its the same across every media player I've tried.

Try playing the videos back using VLC.

Right click on the film whilst its playing and in the options menu you will be able to play around withthe aspect ratio etc.....

hmm i think this is normal with the thumbnails, i have noticed it before but never had the issue you have with playback.

Maybe try 1 more player such as mpc-hc, although if it happens in vlc then i cant see it being down to the player. its got to be the ati drivers =/

did you clean install windows when you got you went from nvidia to ati?

Well your first problem is using the POS Windows 7 version of WMP. :p

VLC and MPC-HC will probably play your videos fine (and with correct black/gamma levels).

Do people not bother reading the original post or something ? I already said I've tried it using 3 different media players, including VLC. The aspect ratio option does nothing but stretch or squash the cut off image/video. I'm planning a fresh install next week so hopefully that will help.

I've tried the drivers that came with the card, the latest drivers from the website and also the default drivers that windows installs when it detects a new card, all with and without CCC and all were the same.

I think cjKennedy might have something though, it's been a while since I did a clean install of Windows and this system has had a Nvidia 7600GT, 8800GTS the onboard HD4200 and a Toxic 5850 all on the same install. I always try and make sure I delete every driver properly before adding a new card but maybe some system settings or config files are being stubborn. I plan a clean installation on Thursday so I'll see how that goes and post back.
