Hey guys,
I wish to organise my Videos folder properly so that all my videos are in 1 default format and at the highest quality they can be.

Most of my videos are in MP4 format.

What I could do with help with is:

1.) Explain about the video formats and what each one does and so on. Basically, You can convert a video from one format to another, but also, you can just alter it's file extension and it still plays. I just wish to get my head around all this sort of stuff.

2.) Also the best way of converting all my current video files into MP4, but in the highest quality possible.

3.) Most of my videos are either in mp4, wmv, avi or mpg.

4.) I would like the videos to be playble in iTunes which is why most of them are in mp4.

5.) The best way of joining several videos together to be one long video and then cutting segments out. Must be nice and simple and not lose quality.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

Changing the extension just changes only that, it's a container format so the codec the audio and video use will still be seen by the player. You may get an error at the start from Windows Media Player saying the extension does not match the contents and if you want to continue...clicking yes will "usually" continue playing using the codecs for the file. It is bad practice to change the extensions this way.

If you use Windows 7 then just customise your groups properly, I have mine for example like this:

WinX HD Video Converter will convert your videos from any format to .mp4, see my thread here. Play around with it and stick to settings that suit your playback routines best.

WinX HD Video Converter will sort your MPG, AVI and WMV files out nicely for .mp4 transcoding.

5.) The best way of joining several videos together to be one long video and then cutting segments out. Must be nice and simple and not lose quality.
VirtualDub will allow you to append in additional files if a video is in multiple parts, just drag in the first file and choose to direct stream copy both audio and video then file > append segment then save as.

There are other free mergers out there too but VirtualDub is quick and easy.

Thanks so much for that information.

What is the difference between all these file types, such as MKV, MP4, WMV and how do you know whether it's H264 or whatever the others are and what are they?

Win X HD Video Converter is Excellent!

Converting all my recorded tv programmes and they convert to MP4 and can't see any loss at all in quality to be honest so they are brilliant!

Thanks,

Can't get VirtualDub to join some files. It has an error when trying to add the first file
