View website statistics (Not my website)

Was wondering how I could do this? Tried a few random sites through google searching but they have all failed miserably. I would just like to see basic stats of a website I am doing a re-design for, this could help me in terms of what level of popularity to expect, what package I will need.

google analytics? Most web hosting control panels will have a stats package you can use.

As mentioned, this is not a website I own, therefore I cant place new code in it to track.

If you're re-designing it for them, ask them for access to awstats or similar? It would help you wish key search phrases etc

I have asked but I doubt they have tracked to this point and I still have no response

I use Piwik on some Personal sites.

Not keen on sharing all my data with Google.

doubt there would be any way to get stats about a website without being the owner for obvious privacy reasons. i don't want my competition to know what pages on my site get the most visits, where they come from, how many people look on my site etc.

If the site doesn't already use some kind of analytics tool (eg. Google Analytics), then running the web server logs through a log analyser is probably your best bet - though of course this will require some kind of server access in order to obtain said logs, and there may only be a short history.

I can't think of any way you could obtain useful statistics without the co-operation of the current technical manager for the site.

If they're using cPanel on their hosting you should find all the server log stats there.
