Ok quick question.

They say in my case 40 inch HDTV that for 1080p you should sit within about 4 feet to get benefits. They say for 720 sit within 8 feet.

Does this mean If I sit at 8 feet I will get as good a picture with 720p as 1080p?

In other words I cant see the benefits off 1080p at 8-10 feet so may as well use 720p or less resoltion?

Or Will 1080p still look a better quality picture than 720p at 8-10 feet? Its just not as good for details as 3 feet

You've been looking at that bloody awful carlton bale chart ******** haven't you? It was always drivel, anyone with a decent CRT would've been able to see how stupid it was years ago (were 2048×1536 21" CRTs useless?) and yet somehow the nonsense has persisted  really you should just experiment and try it yourself. If the source material is high res to begin with, lowering the res will always degrade it. I swear the people that say there is no difference are either liars, charlatans, blind or stupid (trying to compare using source material that was recorded at low res to begin with.)

More res is always good, get as much as you can for PC and computing and use it. The difference is far more obvious than with film (you aren't limited by the recording) On PC you always get a clean generated image, contrast and colour remains the same, but the clarity and sharpness is obvious when you compare - and this is true at much further distances than those silly charts would suggest. If that's not good enough reason, resolution directly affects the amount of workspace and precision available.
