Views on checkatrade?

I've used Checkatrade to find people, but I'm not sure if its worth the expense for you, because I don't believe the reviews I read on it. Or should I say I'm always skeptical of online reviews.

Once I've got the name of a tradesperson on there, I ask around to see if anyones used them before.

I had my oven cleaned about a year ago, after a local business posted on the village Facebook group and it reminded me. They did a great job, but I guess it's not exactly complicated compared to bespoke building and the like.

I've only ever used Check A Trade for things like plasterers, plumbers, roofers etc.

we had our oven blitzed a couple of weeks ago

we got the guy by word of mouth and facebook posts from friends

he was brilliant and of course we then spread the word

do a good job and ask people people to share...costs nothing

same with the decorator we have just booked

asked around the same name came back a few times, he had a facebook pages with examples of his work. messaged a few of his customers and they all were happy to say what a good job he did

and if he does a good job at mine will also speak up for him among all my friends list

We've got a painter/decorator here now, recommended by a friend, and he's great. For your type of business advertising for free on local Facebook groups would be a good shout.

Almost every council in the country has some sort of fair trader programme that you can join for less than £250 and without being pestered to provide endless clickbyte for check-a-trade or TrustMy* or even Yell these days.

You have to ask yourself - last time you were looking for a car garage or lawn mowing company - have you actually ventured onto any of these shill websites to find recommendation or have you found them in some other way? If you never visited one of those websites, then paying to be listed there doesn't make sense, if you never bought or read local newspaper, advertising in them is pointless and so on.

You should do something on facebook, ask people to like your page and share a post for the chance to win a free service.... Personally I'd follow a facebook page like yours to remind me every so often.
