Views on coil whine?

I've never experienced coil whine myself but it's interesting to see how many people are now mentioning it. Is it because of all the hype around it that people are now noticing it more or is it actually just due to cards having coil whine now (or more than before?)

What are the chances that it'll be present on my 970 that I have coming?

I have an old xt1900 and the wine was stupid loud but I loved the card, ppl now days moan about nothing.

All cards have it just some you can't hear and some are like a cat in a blender
 
Had a few cards with some whine but only in game menu's. It never concerned me to be honest and was not an issue in playing any games. Neither of the cards failed in any way.
Unless real bad I personally wouldn't return a card unless it did it during a game(not just in the menu) and only then if noticeable above the sound of the game played through speakers.
The cards I have used since buying a quality power supply have had zero whine and from what I have read on the topic that can make a difference I thihnk,

It is extremely irritating if it's a severe case and if the rest of your system is quiet.
I don't think it's more common nowadays, I just think people are more aware of it now.

And if you've ordered it on ocuk and have got a good quality psu but still have coilwhine, you can RMA it and they'll replace it if they can replicate it so there's extra peace of mind
 
I've had 3 970's now, 1 x msi and 2 x galax. The MSI had no coil whine. The two galax I have now in SLI no coil whine.

Its like with any complaining. You always hear about the bad as we like to moan more than praise. There will be a lot more people who dont have it or cant hear it.
 
Doesnt really bother me as ive only ever had it when stressing the GPU, when gaming normally vsync gets rid of it, but even if it doesnt ya have it drowned out by game sound. When benchmarking my cards squeal like a pig on fire, bit i normally go and watch TV or make a cuppa anyway.

Since its so high pitched it will become less of a problem as ya get older as ya hearing range decreases, i bet its much more annoying for kids.
 
I have a Galax GTX 970 Hall Of Fame, unfortunately it has coil whine issue when playing BF4 online, I dont play any other games (the PSU I am using is XFX Black edition 850w gold, OEM by seasonic).
 
My old hd4790 had coil whine far worse than a lot of the videos posted of people claiming theirs is really bad. Coil whine has existed for a long time so I don't really understand why it's all of a sudden being mentioned at every turn. I sit my rig on the floor these days so between that and it usually happening when under heavy load, meaning I'll be doing something most likely involving other sounds, then it's not the be all and end all issue that it currently seems to be.

Just bought a pair of G1 Gaming 970's and whilst it would be nice not to have coil whine I certainly won't be returning them if they do....unless it's so bad that my child and dog are convulsing on the floor.

because it's more common now.


Coil whine can vary massibely from just about audible to so bad that you can hear it across the room, outside the room, over your headphones etc. the whine my 7950 generates is so bad it bleeds in to the on board audio's outputs and i can hear it through my desk speakers. doesnt do it with a soundcard though so not a massive problem. its loud though, SO loud. But i dont care about that either now as it's being replaced with galax 970 infinity.

Your sound card will have EMI shielding (Electro magnetic interference shielding). It certainly is interesting, if the coil whine is so strong, should it not be considered a fault if it thereby causes other products to become problematic?
 
I had a horrible experience with 970 ended when I purchased the OcUK 970 Reference Design...

Imho it is a lack of respect for customers as they try to cut costs everywhere on components even on premium products!

What cards have actual effective EMI shielding though? None that I'm aware of.

Could whine is caused by loads of different factors and is inherently hard to properly fault find. It's bloody annoying though if you get a bad case.
