Violent Game Questionnaire

Hi guys, im doing my dissertation at the moment on videogame violence and it would be great if you could answer this quick survey.

You dont have to give long answers unless you want to and any that you do answer would be a great help.

Thanks!

Heres the questions: (just quote me and fill in under neath to make it easier.)

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Yes

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
could be toned down,

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Yes, i wouldnt buy manhunt for a 12yr old, then again, i wouldnt buy manhunt for anyone.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I dont think parents pay enough attention to it, on the other hand, if the child is mature enough they can make their own decisions

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Not solely, the person involved has to be stupid enough to begin with, it probably all starts with a person being allowed to behave badly in the first place. Poor parenting and soft schools have more to blame.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Somewhat, but not completely

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Yes, and although i remember playing c18 games when i was younger (11/12), i think more attention should be given to what games younger children are playing. I know of 9yr olds who play GTA, thats not right

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

Yes, i like the wii's direction, a lot of the games for it are innocent and fun

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Yeah kinda, we all know theres a lot of crap on the web

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

Not personally, but i have had games bought for me when i was underage, but like i said before, i come from quality parenting and my parents understood that i was mature enough to decide what games i can handle

there you go

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Yes. I think it can desensitize them to violent acts.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Justified in the games for adults if that's what they want.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Yes.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

There is an element of that, plus parents will come under pressure from kids, but a responsible parent would check.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No definitely not. A person needs an underlying mental problem to commit the crime, but the game could be a contributing factor to a susceptible person.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Yes, because the real reasons why a crime was committed are usually more complicated and it is an easy link to make.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Can't comment as I haven't played any lately.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No because the violent games will still be on the market, but Wii will improve opinions on computer games in general.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
A game is a more immersive experience and therefore has more potential to subliminally affect a kid. A game is more likely to expose a kid to violence that they didn't go looking for.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
No.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Yes possibly, hence the ratings, ie. children shouldnt be playing 18 rated games

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Yes in some examples.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
Yes.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
Ratings do affect some buyers, obviously depends on the parent. I know if i had children i wouldn't give them adult games

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Absolutley.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

Probably Not. As next gen consoles are releasing more and more realistic titles all the time

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
No, playing a game involves the user much more than watching videos. I.e. if the game involves bludgeoning someone to death, the user has to actually direct the character to do so, meaning the player wants to carry that act out?

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
No.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Early exposure to any violence can affect the development of a child.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Yes, No.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
No, the BBFC's arbitrary ratings are worthless, PEGI ratings provide a better understanding of the content, though, I'd prefer to judge a title's suitability based on first hand experience.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
I'd imagine, for most parents (i.e. those who aren't interested in gaming themselves), the rating would be the only deciding factor.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
Absolutely not. There have always been people with such severe mental instabilities that are just waiting for any kind of trigger, whether it be violence done to them, in a movie or a game, these people will always exist so long as they can't get the help that they need.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Absolutely. Time and time again the issue of mental health is sidetracked in favour of sensationalist headlines.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Some titles, yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
Not a chance.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Absolutely.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
No.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Not at all.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Nope, some games need it imo to give you the full effect.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
Nope

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
No, see it everytime i go into vid game shops. Saw a kid about 12 getting his mum tio buy him dead rising :)

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
In the grand scheme of things, no.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Yes very. Media is alwasy looking for something to blame.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Yes definately.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
No

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Definately, two totally different mediums imo.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
No

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Yes, else why do we have game age ratings.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Games today tone down violence too much already.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
For a teenager under 16 yes.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

Yes.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
The media may have a tendancy to exaggerate, that's a given.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

It might help change people's perceptions, yes.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Most definitely.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

Yes. I'd guess that anyone saying otherwise has not spent a huge amount of time around young kids. That being said, the effect is not as dramatic as the media would have us believe.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

In some games its justified, but probably not in a significant proportion of them. There's an increasing trend for violence for evil purposes i.e. GTA, Manhunt, etc.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Yes.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

Probably mostly the latter.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No. They're probably not even much of a factor at all to be honest.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Yes.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Yes. Nothing particularly outlandish comes to mind.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

It might broaden the range of people playing games and demystify it a bit.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Possibly. I wouldn't really like to say.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience? Violence in video games needs no justification, due to freedom of expression.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame? i don't think they are to blame at all, compared to the number of people playing violent games, the number of offenders is infintesimal.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media? yes

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
never, i do not believe in ratings at all.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games? i doubt it

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
There is definitely the possibility that it can, however the mental make up of a child and their home environment would certainly make a difference on how much that effect is.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Yes, it is justified in certain games and the immersion level would be lost without the violence in some games, however that doesn't mean all games need to be violent to have a high level of immersion.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
Certainly, I strongly disagree with a child playing a game that has been clearly marked that it should not be played by a child of that age. Even if I believe the teenager to be mature on some fronts that does not mean they are ready to understand the way a game can effect them.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
I feel they do have an effect on parents, but there are parents out there who do not show video games or indeed the world around them the respect that is required from an adult human. Unfortunately some parents will let their children watch films and play games they are not old enough to understand.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
Not in the slightest, people are far to willing to blame something than address the real problem. Music was blamed for the shooting in columbine when any other pastime the shooters had could have been blamed e.g bowling. It is people's narrow mindedness and avoidance of the real issues that leads to these crimes being blamed on a random game or genre of music or any other one thing.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Definitely, that is not to say that videogames may not have had some influence but is far easier for the media to blame a videogame than address the problems that the person had in the first place.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
Probably not, when people have a scapegoat that doesn't usually change until they find a new one. I truly doubt that the media or politicians would stand and say the truth of the situation and address the problems that had lead to a crime.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
That is debatable, while seeing a real persons head being blown off would certainly effect some children psychologically, for others the ability to control the person doing the same act may also have the same psychological effect. That is not to say that it will happen but there is the possibility, but then a young child should not have access to 15 or 18 rated games and should have some level of parental supervision when on the internet.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
No, nor would I.
