I am considering to order the 100mb package on virgin media, do i need a network card or any other things to get the full speed of the package? Also how does the xbox 360 cope with such a fast connection ?

Cheers folks :cool::cool:

ok thanks, do i need to buy one of these network interface cards, i just have a ethernet port not one of these pci express cards ?

virgin media will supply you with a 'super hub' which will allow you to connect the xbox 360 straight to it via an ethernet cable. same applies to any other devices you wish to connect to the internet.

do i not need to buy something like this to get the 100mb speeds

Waste of money, if you want a high quality network card just get an Intel one like this:

But tbh 99% of people are perfectly satisfied just using onboard NIC's (generally Realtek's), I doubt you'll notice any difference between Intel & Realtek unless you're pushing Gigabit speeds.

One thing to note, Virgins 100mb service is AFTER overheads. So it'll be faster than what 100mb ethernet can provide.

To get those last 10 or so mpbs you'll need a gigabit LAN.

Just a heads up

My parents have upgraded to the 100mb service and was getting really poor download speeds. They have had it for two weeks and never seen it go over 28mb. Phoned virgin and they said it was the network card.

I was dubious but upon looking they were using the onboard NIC from their asus motherboard. Realtek 10/100.

anyway, they purchased an intel gigabit PCI-E card (CT model at £25) and now it downloads at the full speed :eek:

Just goes to show that sometimes Virgin CS are right

It's not the fact that it was a Realtek but that it was a 10/100 one and probably on a weaker specced system so the overheads were too high to begin with. To benefit you really do want a GB NIC and a decent specced PC if it's an onboard card!

you know if you buy virgin 50mb broadband, it will get doubled for free in the next 18 months, depending on where you are... just thought i'd let you know
