Virgin 1Gb or Openreach FTTP

Have been with VM for a few years now. To be fair, reasonable service - currently on M350.

However, we now have FTTP available (in fact the pole is 10 metres from my my house). I now get a few providers for 1Gb or 500mb service. I suspect VM having had a fibre monopoly must feel nervous with competing services.

Question is - Do I stay with VM or move to BT or Sky? Not sure if in present competition, VM will offer great deals. In the past they have been very stroppy and rude!!

FTTP always beats VM - more reliable, less congestion (if any), likely better support, more than twice the upload speed, lower pings and more responsive network.

So go with whatever the best Openreach FTTP ISP deal is that you can find. Check out Aquiss they have a good rep and well reviewed.

Yep. As with every other time this question has been asked (search for info), if you have the choice then take FTTP every time - and twice on Sundays.

Just my 2 cents on Aquiss.
Im currently on 500mbit with VM.
I originally asked them to extend the contract, then I cancelled it within the 14 day cooling off period so now I am back to full price.

Like you I also have the choice of FTTP which I discovered by chance. So I decided to take a punt on Aquiss (I was going to go with Sky but they just messed me around).

The offer I took with Aquiss was the first 3 months half price on their 1gig/900mbit package. This was some weeks ago.

Activation date is 10th October...

I noticed yesterday that they made the offer 6 months half price. I dropped an email to their support if they would honour this. Within 5 mins instant response and no problems to support my request.

So far I am very positive about Aquiss. Cant wait to try their service. I will let you know as soon as thinks are activated.

If all is good with Aquiss, I will downgrade my VM to the basic speed as a backup broadband line.

What's your 4G and/or 5G reception like in the area? I have a work phone which gets 5G and decent speeds, it'll do me if I have an outage on the main line.

Yes I also have a workphone and is what I used in emergencies in the past, but unfortunately very poor 4G speeds here. Would definitely struggle with many people using the connection at same time.

And thanks again for your recommendation on Aquiss Chris.

For as long as Virgin are converting everything to DOCSIS and forcing you to use their Hub, the best option will always be FTTP.

I have decided to go with Giganet 500mbit plan. Monthly plan @£37. Gives me option to move if things do not work out. Will switch the landline to AAISP VoIP.

I’ve got FTTP, I was with VM for decades. Since it was telewest. Changed as soon as FTTP was in my area. Haven’t missed VM at all. Suspect a lot of people will move away now there’s a better cheaper service widely available.

Same here - been with VM for years now - due to no alternatives. This is where VM have lost their monopoly on Ultrafast broadband. Apart from Openreach and City fibre, so many more independent ISSPs have started laying their own fibre cables now.

Personally I would be avoiding Zen, I've not long got out of my contract with them after they made a change to my line without notifying my that made it significantly worse. There's a fair few (large) threads on TBB forums about it. Their customer services has gone downhill and it was a pain to get through to them. Their new leadership are driving them in the direction of TalkTalk but they still pretend like they're a premium supplier.

I wish that were the case in my area. If you want more than 80/20 FTTC it’s Virgin or nothing. I’m still amazed no Alt-net has even expressed an interest.
