Virgin 20meg upgrade it's a joke

We seem to have had the Virgin Media 20meg upgrade her in Cardiff and what a load of rubbish it is.

I've checked my modem status and it's showing Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000 & Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000 so it's been upgraded but the best speeds I can get is 5445kbs, I've been pinging servers all over the place for a couple of hours and this is the best I've got.

Is anyone else around the Cardiff area getting better results than this or am I just unlucky?

If this is what I can expect for £37 a month :mad:

, they can get stuffed they're having a laugh. If it carrys on like this I think it's back to ADSL for me.

it's the NTL250, I've never had any problems with it.

I've had slow speed when it's buys traffic, early evenings when the kid's come home that sort of thing. But these sort of speed for £37 a month is rubbish.

very slow here as well. the first time its ever been consistantly....crap. 5mb downloads arnt on really

Maybe its still settling down from the upgrades.

I wouldnt trust that site either, most I have ever got off it is 17mb yet I can download at 2.35mb/s at any time off newsgroups.

maybe I'll give it a week or so before I throw my dummy out of the pram and start ranting at Virgin

but to be honest I don't hold out too much hope, I think there are too many people in my area on Virgin and thats causing a bottle neck.

I'd be chuffed with that, the way mine is I think it would be more like 172MB in 1hour 34min not 1min 34sec

Try one download, see what you get then. Also connect the modem directly to your PC.

The problem with these upgrades is that it may highlight weaknesses in your current setup e.g.

Modem
Router
NIC

When I was 10mb a few days ago I'd almost always peak at 1.20mb/sec, now with the 20mb upgrade the most I ever seem to get is .80 - .90mb/sec.

I'm hoping the network needs to settle itself, otherwise I may as well downgrade to 5mb and save myself some money.

That site is no good either, im getting rubbish speed off it.

Try newsgroups, u should get free access using the ntl news server.

Modem is the blue NTL250 Router is Netgear MR814 v3

Speeds are fine after midnight until about midday can hit full speed on downloads, its just early afternoon / evening that the speeds are absolutely dire

Virgin would have been better off leaving it well alone

Got same probs here in Basildon area too....when downloading it may peak at 20mbps, but the average files are downloading at are well under 10mbps
