Taken from HUKD, not 100% confirmed as far as I can tell,
Starting from May Virgin will be increasing the speed of their M (2 meg) broadband up to 10 meg free of charge. Good news I think we all agree!
However here's the sneaky part - customers on the current 10 meg band called L broadband mostly pay £7 extra per month for having the 10 meg broadband. Their price will remain the same even though the M broadband customers will be receiving 10 meg.
There are going to be 2 differences between the M and L broadband pack when both are 10 meg -
1) people on M broadband cannot access the additional features of pc guard total - they will only get the standard pc guard. The only additional features the M broadband customers will not receive are - anti spyware, parental control and identity theft protection.
2) there will be a different traffic management policy in place for the M broadband customers - no one knows the details of this but presumably they will stay a little lower in a bid to get you to pay more.
The old M broadband package will be removed from sale on 08 March so based upon the above information it may be worth customers on the higher speeds to downgrade to M broadband before then and wait a couple of months till it goes up to 10 meg (this in most cases would save them £7 a month and the only downsides that are apparent are those in the bullet points above). You'll need to phone virgin on 150 from a virgin phone or 0845 454 1111 to do this. The upgrade is likely to take a few months so not alll areas of the country will get their 10 meg upgrade in May (may be a number of months later).
