hi guys need some help please.
cable came to day to install 50mb fitted new modem and netgear router but did not set it up at all just left was told i needed to set it up on my pc tryed and tryed but the router will only give local access put my old one in and that works
phoned cable and they tell me the router need to be actived and will take 24 hours is this right i tought it was only the modem mac that needs to be turned on

your old router will prob have a mac address for the wan port set. You need to copy this into your new router and i think it should allow it to work, but not 100% sure.

You don't need to do any messing about with MAC addresses. Turn the modem off, disconnect the router, turn it back on, wait for the lights to settle down and connect the router.
That said, you should have got a new modem that shouldn't have had your old router's MAC address in it...

yea did i that that modem off and on and router etc
but no good i tought the mac address was on the cable modem not the router

i know when my virgin media was installed they used the mac address of my laptop, meaning i could plug modem straight in laptop and it worked, yet if connected to router it wouldn't. Once i cloned my mac address onto the router wan port (It's on basic settings on my netgear wgr614v9) it allowed me to connect to internet through router. My mates is the same, yet i know a few people who can plug their modem into any computer and it will connect.

When i had my 50meg installed they told me they where having trouble with it and said it would come on by itself, took 4hrs to get going but its well worth the wait.

working with the netgeat router now only getting 20mb down load is there a way to test the speed useing wifi on my sony vaio z laptop

I thought that they setup everything for you with their 50MB service seeing as they provide the router, that is why they justify the installation cost etc.

If the engineer did none of that, I would ring customer services and try to get a few £ back :)

I am having to wait over a week for my upgrade as apparently they currently only have a handfull of engineers "trained" to do such installations.
