Virgin 50Mb Installation - what do they do?

Can anyone who's been upgraded to 50Mb please comment on how you got yours?

The engineer/installer brings the modem/router/dongle.

IIRC with 50mb you only get posted anything if the engineer doesn't have the correct router/dongle available on the install day.
I think earlier in the year they were short on the correct routers for 50mb due to the Icelandic volcano, so were using the lower end 20mb router, and posting out the replacement as they came in.

Ok its just that i recieved my dlink router in the post...but no usb adapter or modem.

Maybe i'll get 2 routers ;)

Gutted, Virgin engineers arrived at 4:30 (in the dark) and plugged the router in, they said it would be 5 minutes seeing as the old telewest connection was there. Sadly they could not get a lock on it. So they went outside checked the lines, said the line had been cut, patched it back in, still could not get a lock. Went back outside, checked some other wires but still no lock.

They're coming back in the daylight on Monday to see if they can find a cable that works. They pointed out this road had been cabled here since 2003 so things should be easy.

If they don't fix it Monday then there could be another month wait until they get a repull in to recable.

Another month to wait, mannnn I already waited a month for this !!

OMG, they have bastardised my line.

After failing to get it working on Friday evening, they came round again today to try to fix it. I had to go to work but my flatmate was in. They have managed to get it working...and the reason why it wasn't working on Friday....the engineer had the cable plugged in to the Radio port rather than the other port on the connector. MUPPET. I've now inspected the area where they put the router and there's chunks of plaster and wall all over the place, they hadn't tidied up the cables, left everything out and hanging there.

Connected my PC up wirelessly now and I get terrible speeds.

as opposed to the landladys internet downstairs which we have shared for ages now.

well it's not the line, that is adequate, it is the wireless. weak as hell :(

Only 1 wall from the router and yet it is affecting my wireless connection terribly.

This is speed connected via LAN cable

I've had 50meg for ages,
Even if you have 20meg they still have to activate and install it,

although the D-link router isn't up to scratch as it only runs 100 mb/s though ethernet as where the 50 meg modem connected directly runs 1gb/s, not sure how much affect it has on the signal as i'm still hitting 50.55 DL, 3.66 UP and 21 ms ping

There are literally hundreds of threads about the same router and connection problems on the VM forums so I'd say it was a little justified. I got a better service from TalkTalk on a broadband connection where the router is 3 floors down in this house almost 100% signal all the time where as this cable router which is in the next room is only connecting at between 20 - 50% signal. When I do get a connection it takes ages to load google, frequent drop outs and I have to reboot the router.

I read up last night VM have been waiting for a firmware from Netgear for months. They shouldn't be selling this service with known dodgy routers !!! That is my argument here.

Wow, just had a read of that thread and as you say, it's clear the new modem/router combo is a shoddy implementation and causing a lot of issues for people. It doesn't even look like you can put it in to modem-only mode, all packets go through the router side no matter what :/ I'll be holding on to my separate modem for as long as I can!

Exactly. You wouldn't buy a brand new car that drives off the forecourt in limp mode.

I can't have the ps3 on streaming a movie, while browsing the net and my flatmate using his xbox. It just grinds.

I've managed to get a much better wifi rate of around 60% but that just reduces my overal speed by so much. I wish I could run a lan cable from router to my pc but that's just impractical.

I thought that new combo modem/router was only supplied with up to 20Mb. For 50Mb I thought you got a separate modem and router (DIR-615) ??
