I have a similar problem. I can put it downstairs and give the pc a go using wifi but with all the problmes i'd want a cable connection. So it's upstairs where the PC, PS3 and Wii are but then i dont want the TV and phone upstairs, they need to be downstairs. What are the chances of having the wiring done for 2 locations?

It's not a problem - ask them nicely and they will put everything where you want it. My parents have phone in the hall, tv in living room and internet upstairs!

It could be a problem!! If you want it upstairs you'll need to let VM know before hand. Not all engineers can work up a ladder (H&S and all that malarky) so may only install the cable into ground floor.

You maybe lucky and get a guy who is "working at heights" trained, but you may not. I ended up having to run a feed from the box up to the 1st floor myself.

I asked the engineer to run it up to my room but he wouldn't do it :(

But I got a couple of homeplugs and they work perfectly.

Have my Macbook upstairs hooked up by Ethernet to a homeplug and the router downstairs hooked up to the other homeplug. Get 50Mb no problem :)

Thanks Marky, what home plugs do you use? are they easy to set up?

I got these ones. They are incredibly easy to setup - I literally just plugged them both in, made the ethernet connections and they found each other without me even having to do anything!

Very impressed :)

??? what does that do? sorry still learning all this network biz

Flat cable is very thin form of networking cable which is easier to route around the house and sticks out less. It's a good suggestion for anyone wanting to run cable around the house.

The engineer is here now, he said he can wire the Hub upstairs if i want? what you reckon i should do? have the hub wired upstairs to my mac? or put the hub downstairs to and run my imac by wireless? what will be quicker?

be great if i can have a quick reply guys

thankyou

Hub next to your iMac for fast access - ethernet will always be quicker than a wireless connection.

What kind of stuff do they put in the house? I'm moving into a new house soon, but it's rented, so I'm a little worried that the engineer will make drastic changes to the place and causes issues. What exactly to they install? Do they drill through walls and stuff?

mine did coax cable around skirting boards, and one up into the loft, were ive always kept the
Router/modem. But it was easy cause i live in a bungalow.

When i had the 30mb upgrade a few months back the fujitsu engineer had no problem rewiring the cables anyway i wanted, skirting or through walls, and was very professional.
And was even in the attic testing power levels of the older cable i had installed over 11 years ago.

But as always depends on the engineer.
