Hi all

I'm already on Virgins 30Mb service and I was thinking about the 50Mb. I called up and they told me an engineer was required?
What is an engineer required for does anyone know? I already have the Superhub so I have the equipment and I want to know if I can avoid taking time off for a 5 minute visit by some engineer.

Cheers :)

If you were going from the DOCSIS1 to the DOCSIS3 network, then you should have an engineer. You are not, so they simply need to send the new config file to your SH.

All they need to do is send a hit to your modem and job done. They always send engineers round though and they just change the hub most times for the sake of it, its stupid

Thanks, that's what I thought.

Out of interest, I'm paying £37 now for 30Mb broadband, L phones, and M+ TV on a normal Virgin HD box. They're quoting another £12 for 50Mb BB.

That would bring it to £50 for 50Mb BB, L Phone, M+ TV.
Does that sound reasonable compared to what you guys are paying?

Also Virgin are stating a £30 one off upgrade charge for the upgrade to 50Mb. Seems bit of a con considering they're doing nothing but send a new modem config...

I'm tempted by the speed but can't help but think they're not offering the best value.

I had the same issue I spoke to the 50Mb team via there forum and they sorted it out for me without having to send out an engineer, As I already had the correct modem etc.

unless your having problems with your 30mb connection i wouldn't upgrade.

Makes no difference really as 30Mb and 50Mb both run on DOCSIS 3 so by upgrading nothing should change with the way his modem connects to the internet.

If he aint having problems with his 30Mb he shouldn't have any problems with his 50Mb

shouldn't have no, but the way virgin is performing at the moment i just wouldn't do it.

Have you actually had problems in Telford? As far a i was aware most of Telford has been resegmented?

various problems that haven't lasted to long fortunately.

classic being told they had shut there computer systems down for half a day for software updates so no problems could be logged.

but there may be more issues in the op's area than mine.

they lock the system down so you can only use their modem/router but take 2 days to deliver a replacement, and they don't supply spares so you can't get a backup yourself to test if you get problems.

but as i said if the op has no problems with his current connection i wouldn't upgrade, as the vm forum has numerous threads of people upgrading and getting problems.

as you said he should have no problems, i just wouldn't take the chance unless there was a reason to.

The connection in my areas has been flawless so I'm happy to stay with them and upgrade to 50Mb, I'd like to upgrade so I can download during the day and don't have to wait until after 9pm.

Nick.123 which forum was that exactly? I'll attempt that track :)

They are when people upgrade from DOCSIS1 to DOCSIS3.

If he upgrades to 50Mb and is not happy he can downgrade back down to 30Mb no problem since he has a 28 day cooling off period or whatever its called but if already on DOCSIS3 then no problems will be had
