Any one a member? How much does it cost? what are the free weights like? is there anything else you want to say about it? :)

I'm starting a years internship in July and I'm just researching now the best gym to join and the positioning of the virgin one is just right! :)

Surely just go and have a look round one??
Used to belong to one when I was in England - pretty decent size, not big enough free weights area for all the pretty boys busting out bicep curls all the time. Quite expensive but then had a nice pool/hot tubs/ sauna and steam room area :)
They seem to want to make them a good 'social place' and focus on that a lot which is annoying (unless your into all that), I prefer a gym to be a gym ;)

They are more health clubs than gyms, and definately quite a social place rather than just working out. If you check out their website, you'll see that the average club has a spa, kids area, internet stations and a bar/cafe, which you wouldn't necessarily expect at a normal gym. I wouldn't go there if I was only interested in weights, as that's really not their focus.

It's really difficult to get prices without actually going down for a visit, and every club is different (depends on the area and what it has to offer). If you go here, there's a form to fill out to arrange a visit to your local club, and with that you'll get all the different prices and what each level of membership gives you.

I'd agree with Vixen - I was a member of Virgin Active in Solihull for a couple of years and it seemed pretty well equiped for a range of activities, but the free weights section was a little sparse.

I'm a member in Angel, (though use the solihull one as well when I'm working up that way) and I'm relatively pleased with it. The bonus of it being a bit more health club like is that the squat rack is usually free, the downside is that no one ever seems to replace their weights so I spend a good 5 minutes scurrying around the place trying to find a pair.

I'm gonna try and book a trial day or something at some point. I don't really mind it being a health club so long as it has the weights. Just means I can go there to relax in the sauna and steam room as well!

I've been going to an Esporta gym as a guest for the last two weeks, but won't be able to join as its in the region of £90 a month. The virgin one sounds like pretty similar facilities for less money. Thanks for all of your help!

I'm a member at the new Nottingham one. Lots of space, very well equipped (sauna, steam room, pool etc.) and there is a big free weights section but that could be because it has only recently been refurbished and open. Though it is fairly expensive at about £50 per month i think it's well worth it.

The one in solihull is pure class

2 swimming pools, one in, one out

3 saunas, steam room, jacuzzi and a giant swimming pool with loads of different water jets

Then theres the gym, which isnt bad either, id join if it wasnt so damn exspensive and I didnt have another gym 2 minutes walk from my house :(!

I'm a member at the Nottm one too and it's pretty good.

If you are thinking about joining a gym, go through quidco.com and pruhealth.com to save yourself some serious cash! I think there is a thread about it on moneysavingexpert.com.
