Are Virgin literally trying as hard as they can to be beyond useless?! I know during peak times speeds wont be that fast but last few days have been awful! My 8Mb ADSL is currently downloading @ 30k/sec, last few evenings its gone down (and stayed that way for a while ) to less than 10k/sec. I can't actually believe an 8Mb line downloading at dial up speeds. Anyone else having problems? Nout i can do as well as my mum is been really stubborn and wont leave Virgin!

I've got 4mb and it's been up to speed. My connection went like yours a couple of months ago but it's been fine now.

Could phone them up and see why this is?

Cable grinds to a halt too, they seem to hate the Bittorrent protocol as well, no matter how much encryption I use...

But regular browsing shouldn't slow down to 15KB\s, the throttle for my connection is supposed to be 128KB\s.

Sabotage something to cause disconnects. Blame it on Virgin, order mac and leave.

I feel your pain, they were terrible 11 months ago when I left.

Virgin Media have a traffic management policy, as outlined here. The document only refer to the cable packages, but I assume they apply a similar policy for ADSL users. Basicaly, it means that if you download a certain amount in a day (not sure how much for ADSL), they cap the download and upload speeds between 4pm and midnight that evening (peak hours). Because I share my connection with the missus and we both work from home, we find that the download speed is pretty low by the evening (often 30-40KB/s).

Are you sure it doesn't apply to ADSL? My DL speeds are always good in the AM, but rubbish in the PM (especially evening). I assumed it was traffic management, but maybe it's just line contention.
