Sony Batteries are evil, they may explode and possibly cause a mid-flight disaster, lets ban Apple and Dell Laptops.

Until further notice, all Dell and Apple laptop users have to have their Dell or Apple battery
...kept separate from its host computer, wrapped up and kept in the traveller's carry-on luggage. Passengers may only bring two batteries on board with them...

Sony Laptops however, are not affected.

Edit: Virgin, Qantas and Korean Air are restricting the use of these laptops.

Any chance you guys owning these laptops are flying on virgin airlines anytime soon?

Edit2: Apparently, it's not all Dell and Apple laptops, only those that are in the recall list.
Edit3: Ignore Edit2, Virgin is playing safe by banning ALL Dell and Apple Laptops (ZDnet)
Dell has said it believes such measures are an overreaction, since the product recalls have only affected particular types of batteries. "They could easily check out whether a laptop uses a Sony battery or other brand instead of banning them all," a Dell product manager told the Korea Times following the Korean Air ban. Apple did not respond to requests for comment in time for this article.

Do you get a slip or cert that says your battery have been replaced? I can see Virgin Airlines service counter checking these slips befor you are allowed to board with your laptop - lol, makes you feel like you're carrying a potential bomb on the plane dont it? ;)

Damn, I have three Virgin flights over the next few months. New York, Hong Kong and Las Vegas

I have a Dell that doesn't have a battery affected by all this, i've checked!

I've just taken my Dell Laptop on a Virigin flight from LAX to LHR (landed Sunday) and asides from the secruity check, no-one mentioned it again.

I was in economy though, so they probably don't bother as there is now power for them.

The V-Port system is entertaining enough though, but I could not find Mario on it, and I wish they had changed the TV episodes on the way back, they were the same even though it was different planes.

I never take my laptop on personal trips just on business ones and even then never use it during the flight

Well I hope that BA don't take this ridiculous policy into their terms before the 2nd of oct because I AM taking my lappy otherwise I'll go nuts being without my stuff for three weeks :O

VPN to my home network and all that :) doubly so since I've secured access to a T1 connection while I am in Bermuda

They're both using SONY made Battery - which oddly enough, doesn't really affect SONY's own laptop range - funny huh? ;)

Sony aren't stupid enough to use their own products... in their own products :D

3 Weeks without your laptop?
You CAN take your laptop with you but not the batteries - you'll have to store them separately in your check-in laguage, so if BA do join the "party", you'll have your laptop but not able to use it on-board unless a socket is next/under your flight seat.

Yeah I know, I read the articles a minute ago, but still ... it hasn't exploded yet ... unless its secretly packed with pressurised napalm or sommat :)
