Hi guys i have a major problem with my broadband which i hope you can help me with! The problem started monday night when our Virgin digi box packed up which the internet runs through, thus no internet! Virgin came round the next day and installed the new box, but still i didn't have any internet?! After around 4 hours of fart arsing around i gave in and decided to phone Virgin broadband support!

45 minutes later still on the phone and 1 uninstalled network card later which they got me to do they pretty much said they have no idea what is wrong and all they can advise is i phone a pc repair shop! I dont know what to do guys, i have never had a problem with my computer which i have not been able to fix since i was 14! It must be something so simple and all i can think that it is, is that some how some option has been disabled when the digi box (modem) packed up?!

I really hope you guys can help and tell me what i should try as i will make a list because im at my dads right now and after tommorow night i shall have no internet until i get this fixed or im round here next! Ask any questions that you need to know and i will answer asap :)

Thanks :)

p.s i have posted this in "General Hardware" aswell cos i didn't know where to post it really :s

ok..well I've had problems with virgin recently.

Did you ring up the freephone no and go to 'thinking of leaving' cos you get better service there. I get a lot better service that way and the call charges are free . ;)

You say you have never had a problem you can't fix..well I would be assertive and tell them that if they don't sort it then you will claim a refund and leave or something. Do it gentle and I'm sure they will run to you to help the problem.

Hope this helps.

any chance you can try you're kit somewhere that has internet to prove the pc setup is ok.

tbh seems a bit dodgy the box went now you have no internet, unless the box took out the network card and any onboard ports i reckon its the box setup.

Reinstall your network drivers, and ensure everything is plug in where it should be, i used to have a ntl cable modem i believe its the same thing, they were just connected to the arial type cable coming into the house, maybe the guy that installed the digi box haven't connected it back up properly. If it still doesn't work I'd say it was a modem problem.

If it was me i'd phone them up again and demand that they come and fix it. Also if the phone call is costing you make sure you tell them that you want a deduction from your monthly charge to cover that and also for the fact that you've had no internet for x number of days.

It was the t.v box that went which took the internet with it as the box is pretty much the modem.

Are you using a router ? If so can you access that via the lan?

Does windows show you have a live connection to the box router?

We need more info here.
What box etc are you running, and is this a single PC it's plugged into or a router etc?

The worst case I have seen of this was at a friends.
He just had a pace set top box, and NTL had run the wire from the box outside the house to the room his PC was in.
I went round to look, and after many hours messing, I just happened to have a 15 metre network cable and ran it between his box to his PC and all was fine.
Somehow the cable NTL had fitted had broken outside. It had been done neatly mind, no kinks etc and nicely hidden.
The cable was only basic network cable, and not for outside use at all!

He'd been told to take PC to shop as well, which seems to be the last resort if it doesn't work.
It may also depend who you speak to at support cos they can look at the modem / box from their end.

I take it the engineer phoned through the MAC address of the new box? If that wasn't done then your modem isn't active.

It should be 'par for the course' that if they have installed something they should make sure it's working before they go.

Not good working practice to have engineers going out installing things and not checking things are working or not surely.

I was running through the router but i have tried connecting straight through my pc and still nothing! I also have the same wireing as your friend! Out through the lounge up the outside wall and back into my room :s

Well he had an exclamation mark through his connection in windows.
It said something but connected but a fault or similar.

Was lucky I had the lead really.

Same here but its saying to me im connected to an "Unknown System(?)" which is the digi box and then the internet! I have a green line which i take is a faultless connection to the digi box, but a grey line to the internet which means no connection to the internet what so ever?!

this doesnt help much, but move to sky.. last november virgin media told me that everybody would be upgraded to 4mb, phoned up a week ago, and they said it wasnt true.. yeh thats a great way to keep customers, lie to them.... so im paying £18 a month for 2mb.. so im gonna switch, id advise u do the same..

I have had a bit of a break through! I forgot Virgin are coming out monday to give me a modem as we are upgarding to 10mb so hopefully i should be ok as the digi box will not have anything to do with the internet any more!
