Virgin browsing issue - DNS-related?

We have a 20MB broadband line at home and this morning it was practically unusable. Some sites needed a couple of attempts in order to load, some refused point-blank. Couldn't connect to World of Warcraft - got to the login screen and no further.

When a site refused or struggled to appear, in the status bar at the bottom left of the screen Firefox was showing "Looking up facebook.com ..." or whatever the name of the site. Am I right in thinking this indicates a problem with DNS, where Virgin's server is struggling to resolve the IP address that the domain name relates to?

Thankfully, this seems to be the only problem we have with our connection - I normally switch off the router and cable modem once a fortnight and boot them up again a minute or so later, but there's normally a complete failure 2 or 3 times a year that cannot be resolved with a restart.

Is Virgin's DNS known for being a bit ropey? I've just been reading about OpenDNS - has anybody on VM broadband ever tried this or a similar service? Cheers in advance fellas ...
