Ok guys new member here, and new to fibre connectivity, so go easy on me please.

Long story shortened. We have an ongoing Leased Line install saga. 2 sites about 7 miles apart, we currently have a 10mb Legacy NTL/Virgin Leased line and wanted to upgrade to 1gb. Virgin couldnt upgrade the existing kit so offered a completely new install, and subbed the whole job out to BT. then the problems began, because Virgin and BT dont talk to each other.

After 6 months, Ive finally got a line installed, BT have signed it off, but it wont connect to our network.

At one end we have a ADVA FSP150CM router and a BT supplied fibre cable/loop which has a mini SFP connector into the ADVA device and an unknown end which looks like an SC Duplex. At the other site we have a ADVA FSP150CP with the same cable issue as above, an unknown interface.

We have HP procurve switches at both sites which have fibre SFP connectors. Our IT company have tried a fibre cable with Mini SFP connectors at both ends looped from the ADVA device into the procurve ( same at both sites) but the line just wont work.

BT have signed the leased line off as being active and handed the job back to Virgin, but we have had no technical help with getting the kit onto our network and Virgin and BT are not forthcoming after being pushed.

Im pulling my hair out and desperate to get the line live as its delaying an urgent project.

Can anyone advise? Is there some specific kit needed?

thanks.

Silly question but have you tried setting your port negotiation manually? Might be worth trying 10, 100, 1000, half and full duplexes at both ends.
I've had it on numerous occasions that the ADVA kit isn't configured to autonegotiate by BT.

We haven't had our Gb line installed yet but the 100Mb ones (copper) need the port setting to auto speed and full duplex, wouldn't connect when forced to 100Mb. Also had one of our 100Mb lines installed as 10Mb!

There are two stages to a leased line install. The first stage, BT will install their side of things and will then sign it off. The second stage Virgin will have to provision the lines on their system, they will need to setup the VLAN’s etc.

Have Virgin finished their part? It might be worth checking with them. They should send you the details of the VLAN ID’s and IP addresses.

I’m unfamiliar with the ADVA FSP150CM’s but I have clients which use the ADVA FSP150CP’s. The FSP150CP is not a router, it is a NTE (Network Termination Equipment) you will still require a router. The fibre will come into the building and will go into a fibre tray, from the fibre tray it will connect to the ADVA FSP150CP. The ADVA FSP150CP will have an Ethernet port, plug that into a router which supports VLAN’s and then configure it.

It is a layer 2 circuit so this will entirely depend on what the OP wants to do and not set by BT. You can have it access ports both ends if he wishes or trunks or have a router on both ends.

OP, plug a laptop in both ends and get communication between them. Work your way up from there.
