Hey guys, i recently got upgraded to the 100MB super hub by virgin media but I have been having issues with connectivity/the signal dropping. I contacted virgin media and they said that i should upgrade my wireless adapter in my computer as it is fairly old. Just wondering what suggestions you have for a decent one that will fit with my super hub, apparently i need N series? However i was wondering whether given my pc is around 3 years old whether or not my computer would be able to use a very new adapter? Also if anybody knows if I am able to convince virgin media to provide these for free or not? :D

Do you know what wireless card you have in your computer?

Thats a fairly standard response from Virgin however the truth is that the Superhub is pretty useless! A lot of people have good success using the Superhub in Modem Only mode and using a 3rd party router.

This is what i've recently done after putting up with the Superhub for around 10 months and the difference is huge :)

You will almost certainly need an 802.11n capable wireless card for high wireless speeds, but you'll also ideally need a new router.

The wireless on the superhub is a travesty, use it as a modem only.

Agreed, the Superhub is dire. I recently got my 100Mb upgrade from virgin, it was lovely, but a replacement router is a must!

I'm in the same situation and cannot stand the superhub. Can anyone recommend a decent router that can potentially handle 120meg when the upgrade hits?

I asked in the Virgin thread the other day and the general consensus is the Asus 56U. I ended up getting it yesterday and its been good so far. Big improvements for my son playing BF3 online.

Have you tried changing the Wireless channels on the VM SuperHub. This worked for me and was the 'recommended' solution by VM engineer. You can use your own router and simply put it into Modem Mode.

Also I have some Netgear (PowerLink) Home Plugs that I use and the VM Engineer advised not to use this as the SnR could cause issues down the line. Now I dont know if this is true or just VM engineer BS!

Since changing Wireless channels and a recent 100MB upgrade my VM SH is working fine.

I see your in Poole, I'm in Bournemouth. Just moved from a very old Virgin Media package. Got the Tivo box for free no installation costs and large TV, and I'm paying less. Although to get this I missed out on the 60mb Broadband upgrade.

Thing is I'm kinda gutted Tv is great HD channel's etc. Better box can record.

I took my old Belkin N1 wireless router out and they installed there 'super hub' more like 'super *****'

Now my wireless connection strength goes from low to good. Previously it was excellent all the time!

Now what do I do? Stay back in contract for a year with better tv but **** signal strength on broadband or do I go back to my existing no contract service and 60mb broadband and by my own good wireless router???

Nice thread revival.

Why not just use a router anyway. It makes no difference what package you are on as you are stuck with a superhub no matter what.

Also R36 update should be fine if your drivers are up to date etc

Ah yea of course didn't think of that, anything above 20mb and they send you the 'Super Slug' oh well.

I have just checked the firmware it's R36

are the Superhubs reasonably stable in modem only mode ?

phoned up to complain - or ask if "still in a contract" - that the free double in speed has been delayed for 12 months for my area

they offered 20 to 60mb for £-5 a month compared to what paying now - 12 month contract

or

20 to 100mb for £0.50 more than currently paying - 12 month contract

tempted with the 100

i got upgraded to 100mb on thursday. Installed the SH and put it straight into Modem mode to work with my WNDR3800.

I'm currently running a Broadband Quality monitor to see how my connection is running. So far so good though but have not downloaded anything which has brought pout Max speeds. Not even usenext has tested it!!!

the first red section is where i hadn't allowed ping on my router

Im having a bit of a nightmare with mine, run it in router mode and im getting a good 100mb/s on speedtest.net soon as i put it into modem mode so i can use my VPN router (Cisco WRVS4400N V2) it speed drops to 20mbs, i thought it must be the router, so i tried an old Linksys and it still only hits 20mbs.

Does anyone if there are any settings that you need to change on your routers to get the most of of modem mode?

Thanks

Old routers might not be powerful enough. Are the models you tried definitely capable of routing > 20Mb/s WAN to LAN?

Are you testing using wired or wifi?

Thanks for the reply. I'm testing wired connection, I'm not sure about the routers, the Linksys is a couple years old now but I only bought the Cisco WRVS4400N V2 the other day, i know its got high-speed wireless & gig ethernet ports

Wow thanks, i must say your google powers are strong, i just typed Cisco WRVS4400N with Virgin superhub and got someone going on about their xbox :D
