My boss has jsut got off the phone from VM and they tell him that as of feb 1st they will be upgrading all 2mb connections to 10mb. 10mb will be the lowest package they will do. Apparently they will make that the M pack, 20Mb will be L Pack and 50Mb will be moved to XL. A bit strange them going through all the trouble to promote it as XXL tho?

Huh so 2mb users will pay their 2mb price for 10mb ? if this is true everyone should downgrade to 2mb I guess ?

If it's anything like my current 10mb package (spends most of the time at 2mb) then this is nothing for Virgin to shout about.

their upgrading their networks though as weve had our network upgrade in the wakefield area and we get 20 meg constantly unless we hit the usage policy for their traffic management

if 2mb users do get upgraded, it wont be free. your monthly cost would definately go up, i cant see them doing it for free with no extra costs...

lol ruddy typical!

last month when they were doing that free upgrade to 10meg for a month i contacted them to find out about it and the guy i spoke to upgraded me to 10meg for free without the offer they were doing while i still pay my ususal 2meg price. I thought I got an awesome deal but it seems not if everyone on 2meg is getting 10

They usually upgrade the speed but not hte cost, they have done ever since it was 150k afaik?

It's been a long time since I've been on cable - in fact it was NTL in my day.
But over the years I was with them (starting at 512k) nearly every year we'd get a speed increase for no extra money.

Makes sense. 2mb looks pretty paltry compared to what the competition, i.e. Sky offer, and at the high end Sky/o2/Be make VM look hideously overpriced. £52 for 50mb was never going to recoup them any of the money invested in the network upgrades, and hammering every tier with traffic or application management obviously helps them keep their costs down anyway.

dont forget that with sky/o2/Be etc you need to also pay for a BT line so it isn't THAT bad when the prices tend to end up about equal though with the mentioned companies all offering 8meg or there abouts compared to VM's 2meg, VM still doesnt look too competitive.

Vm works out far cheaper if you take phone broadband and tv package than having a bt line and sky though.

Surely it can't be 10mb that 2mb is going to. What about the 10mb tier right now? I can't see them putting us to 20mb & then the 20mb customers to 50mb for free.

I think logically it will be upgraded to around 5-6mb at most.

Bit of luck this shuffle of packages might allow them to realign the prices they charge.
I know, dreaming again but you never know.

How much is a 2Mb package at the moment compared to a 10Mb nowadays?

well if you take their phone line its £31 for 20mbp and £21 for 2mbp with the phone line. i think 10mbp comes in at £25-27 per month.

Heh, those lucky enough to sign up in July 2008 are still laughing (like me). I signed up to a one year deal for BB only (10MB). I pay £16p/m which is price capped for the year (so runs until July, then it goes up to £24p/m). My best ADSL speed was 5MB. Thing is though, I can then decide to switch to ADSL or one of their new services based on prices. That was the best deal they ever did IMO. I also get 10MB constantly (barring when I hit traffic management. Pings aren't great though and certainly not like they used to be when I had NTL in 2001... Now they are a halfway house between fastpath ADSL and interleaved ADSL due to fluctuations. I still ping at about 15ms for most UK servers but this does vary drastically.

Most days mine hovers around 4-5mb. My free upgrade from 4mb to 10mb hasn't really changed my speeds but it was free so I'm not complaining. Although I might consider changing over to Beunlimited as they do 20meg i think with no download restrictions
