What's the modem/router that Virgin provide with their ADSL connections like? Is it easily configurable for stuff like port forwarding etc, or will I be stuck with one of those proprietory jobbies where the user is completely locked out of the configuration menu unless you flash it to some kind of custom firmware?

I don't think how good the router is will matter too much - the service is so bad on VM ADSL (far worse than the cable service) that you'll soon forget about anything but trying to get out of your contract.

That's worrying! tbh I'll probably still stay with them though as they're offering me phone and 10Mb broadband for £14 a month, and if I go with any other ISP it'll work out at £20+ because I'd have to pay an additional £10.50 BT line rental.

No cable in my new place unfortunately, though I still have 3 months left on my contract with Virgin which is another incentive to stay with them. (Ignore my previous post btw, just realised I'd have to pay line rental on top of whatever they quoted me whichever ISP I go with - been on cable too long to know how this stuff works!)

Right..so you'll be switching down to the ADSL?

If you can afford it, I'd strongly consider getting ADSL from another ISP. Even with the unfun of paying extra/finishing your VM contract, you'll be a lot better served with the likes of Be, Sky (LLU only) or if no LLU, an Entanet-reseller.

You won't get 10Mbps from ADSL so if they told you that, you should have a perfectly good reason for getting away from them.

You might get higher or lower than that. It's really impossible to tell until you actually have your line running and can get attenuation/snr stats.

ADSL2+ should increase it slightly too (4.5 mbits > 6/7 mbits with luck).
