HI all

for the last couple of weeks between 8 and 10 i have been receiving very bad lag and latency which ment i was unable to play any kind of online game

i had the same problem all day on sunday.

when doing tracert www.bbc.co.uk in cmd i find that some of my hope come back with 200+ milisecond pings. somtimes its hops at the end which im told isnt virgins problem but somtimes its ones with the ntl name which are.

i phoned them today and they got me to chance one setting in internet options (connections, lan settings, auto detect route i think)

im not convinced this will fix my problem, does anyone have any ideas of a fix?

is there anyway of making my connection take a better route bypassing these hops that are so bad?

im a bit of a network noob so any advise would be welcome, if there is anything u need to know about my connection or settings please ask and i will try to post the answer

thanks all

Loki

There's not much you can do (bar keep pressing VM for an answer or change ISP, which would mean getting ADSL), but getting a high value for a given hop doesn't necessarily mean it's causing a problem - most routers have a low priority for responding to pings if they're busy processing other packets.
Also, you'd be better trying a traceroute to some of the server you're actually trying to use than to the BBC website.

so should i be able to find an ip address for wow or lotro servers that i have been having trouble with?

alternatly i guess i could ping our call of duty server.

wills eee if i can find the IP for one of the above,

do you know if the setting the virgin guy got me to change is likely to do anything?

thanks for your help

i think i might just get a BT line installed and get ADSL.

im past the 12 month contract period with virgin so at least im not tied down anymore
