Recently i moved back to my student digs and we have virgin media 20mg cable and have done for a year now. However 2nite the connection went..well abit mental. Our whole house (6 bedrooms) is etherneted up so at first i thought it must be that so i connected directly to the router (modem connects to the wireless router from there we run a cable to the closet under the stairs to a switch and then the connection is divided up for the house) via the switch using my desktop pc lan. The connection still continued to play up, dropping every so often at random times.

I decided to try different ethernet cables that connect from the back of my pc to the switch but no luck, i then tried my laptop using the ethernet at first but still the connection dropped and then i tried the wireless however that still dropped.

For some reason our past tennants left their old virgin cable modem behind ( i think) but for whatever reason we have 2 black virgin media cable modems, seeing as the original was playing up and im certain is not the router or the switch or the cabling in the house i decided to plug the old modem in a give it a swirl, it connected but brought me to a setup page, like you would get after your connection is activated for the first time and you setup your login details etc etc. Seeing as my house mate whos the owner of the net connection (his name is on the bill) i didnt proceed any further but i was still able to browse the web. I then pluged the original router in and the same page/welcome/log in/setup page appeared, i closed it and now im here.

But so far so good, the connection is stable with no timeouts, ive been able to connect to mIRC, browse and have eve online running. If for whatever reason the cable router is definetly the problem, does virgin allow the use of other cable modem routers to be used?

tl:dr

can i use a different cable modem router instead of using virgins black cable modem and router combo?

Do you have two seperate units ? like a modem as one thing, and a router as another?

If so, then yes you can plug your cable modem in to any router that you like.

yes two seperate units, however i was looking at the cable modem routers on ocuk. so instead of the two we would just have one.

They're not cable modem routers, they don't have an integrated cable modem, they're just routers. They're labeled 'cable routers' to indicate that they can be used with cable broadband, unlike 'ADSL routers' which have an integrated ADSL modem. You still have to use the VM supplied cable modem, in fact you're not permitted to use any other modem.

ah i see, so its down to ringing up virgin to get a replacement if the problem contiues. However ive still had no problems with the net as of yet so only time will tell.
