Hi,

i currently have 50mb virgin media setup in the front living room and would like to move it up stairs.

Is it possible to buy the white cable they use to connect to the superhub?
How long could the cable be before performance was affected?

Cheers in advance.

Shouldn't lose any speed running the cable up there, however, what I did was left the modem where it was and added a (cheap) gigabit switch, then ran an ethernet cable up to a second switch in my office upstairs.

You can use double shielded satellite cable. It uses F connectors on the ends. The virgin ones are a special type of crimping connector, but screw on satellite ones work just as well.

All I will say is if you want it moving then either get virgin media to move it for you or try to convince a tech to leave you some cable and come back to put the ends on.

There is not a lot of cable on the market that can handle the bandwidth needed for VM. Satellite cable is crap and most of it says suitable for virgin media but its not

Never had a problem with the F Type SAT Connectors. Was always maxing out my Virgin Connection. :)

Its all to do with ingress/egress and the way the connectors fit. I suppose if you use the correct tool to strip the cable then they technically would be fine if you buy good quality ones but I'm forever replacing crappy satellite cable and dodgy screw on f connectors because of people having faults.

Most problems will be a low SNR on upstream due to dodgy connectors allowing noise into the network

the swtich isn't something i've looked at, the trouble i will also have is i need the wifi part also moving to the bedroom as my phones wont reach to the superhub at the moment.

I bought a 10metre double ended pre-made cable from m****** to use with TV box and no probs. Use 3m cable on my 30MB modem with no probs

Yes they do. Sky use the screw on type. Virgin use a nickel plated screw one, which uses a small plastic ferrule to crimp the end on. It requires a special tool to push the end on.

Yip. As said above, it's not essential that you use crimp ones, I've used screw on connectors in the past, but yes VM themselves in every install I've seen have always used crimp ons.

becarefully extending the cable connected to the modem the signal levels might not be strong enough if you make it to long and you could have all kinds of issues

Whilst this is true, provided you use OK quality cable & connect the plug OK then there should not be much degradation of the signal.

Anyways, all the people I personally know have attenuators fitted to their cables, so a little less signal would be welcome!!
