Virgin Media Contract Continuation

Hi, I've recently had a change of address and decided to stick with Virgin Media (50meg) so rang them and asked for the my account to be moved over to the new address. Long story short after installing I found they have basically made a new account on their system, so if I ring them they have no record of being with them for the last two years. To add to this they hiked the price to £50 a month behind our backs which is outrageous but that was solved with an hour or two on the phone to 6 different people.. The price hike may or may not have any effect on my question:

Two years ago we signed a 12 month contract (in person) which has long since expired, but is it possible for them to put us back on a contract without us signing another document (i.e. will they argue it refreshed verbally) or can we still dump them anytime?
