Hi all just a quick one,

Am i right in thinking theres is currently a speed cap on Virgin Media Broadband everyday after ive D/L more that 700mb even if its direct from a website the speed drops to 7kb to eventually stopping all together with me being forced to reboot the system & broadband modem.

I read on a different forum that its currently being capped since Virgin took over NTL.

Some info:

Been with NTL since DEC 2002
Old style modem Model No.60194E-A12
Ethernet connected
Service L 4MB - Read its capped at 750mb

Any Help guys - thought it was utorrent at first but all configs are still having the same results so tried direct of websites and still happening.

Many thanks

Jason

I have been getting appaling speeds recently with Virgin. 20MB line and can only get 5mbish on the newsgroups (i used to get 18.8mb!!)

What's going on?!

Yes Virgin Media enforce a traffic management policy for cable broadband customers, and have done since around April last year. The policy itself was updated in the last month or two and is detailed here.

That shouldn't result in your download speeds dropping to 7kb/s though, but then torrents aren't really the best way to test your download speeds. This is probably the best place to get more info and the site itself has a half-decent speed checker for Virgin customers.

Incidentally Virgin didn't take over ntl, ntl bought Virgin Mobile and acquired the rights to use the Virgin name, the management is still very much ntl.

Same here, its been appalling in this area for a few months now but judging by the VM support group we aren't the only area.

There is currently a problem with the local UBR, the ticket (558169) for this has been open since October.. :(

So there has been an 'official' complaint made? Let me know what happens please mate

Have a read of the link below in relation to a study that was carried out not so long ago sampling three petabytes of internet traffic and youll start to wonder why ISP's are starting to implement tighter traffic shaping.

Im on Virgin and have been very happy with them for the last two years, try and look at it from the ISP's point of view, i have seen personally what sites like You Tube and services like Bit Torrent can do to even a small unmanaged network of approximately 500 hosts, now multiply that by millions.

The fact your broadband stops alltogether has nothing to do with Traffic Management/capping. The Traffic Management/capping only happens between 4pm and 9pm. There are no limits outside those times.

Im on VM and it all but dies between about midday and midnight. There is a known problem with the internet down here (Devon), there is even a red light against the internet in service status (Red indicates, serious problem or no service), yet nothing has improved since joinging them in September. Sometimes I can get 4mbit, and pings of 20-30, and then it will just die to 10k speeds and pings 2000+!

Nobody seems to be able to give a reason for the issues?!

as I type this I'm downloading the 1.2 patch for the Witcher at 5.3K/sec from the official site...it's bloody appalling and someone needs a bullet put in their head

EDIT - I didn't mean the bullet in the head thing...i'm just frusterated beyond all hope...I love ET:QW with a passion but I can't stay up until after midnight to play it as I'm a working father....

Has anyone called or email virgin about why it's so crappy?
