I'm trying to sort out the internet for our shared house this year, we've narrowed down to a package from virgin media and I'm trying to resolve the problem:

We'd like the minimum possible 'downtime' upon moving in to having an internet and tv connection.

But we'd like to avoid the situation where we order the broadband in advance and have problems where the welcome pack/modem can't be delivered as nobody has arrived yet.

We know the house has already had a virgin media connection, so arranging an engineer install is not required, but having only had ADSL before I'm not aware on the likely length of activation time between passing over my bank details and receiving a working connection.

Has anybody any experience with Virgin media? Are we talking about a few days wait before the modem arrives/line activates, or should we expect a week(s).

I'll appreciate concerns that there are plenty of things to distract us other than TV/Net, but with 99% of the uni to student communication done by email and friends working in freshers week/arranging student societies, having a net connection active is important.

Any help would be great, thanks.

I moved house a few months ago and it took two weeks to install and a further two weeks for them to return to replace a faulty modem external co-ax as they CBA to switch my PC on to check.

I would think that they'd still need to send out an Engineer to install and test, dependant on what is there already.

Book it well in advance and you'll get a wider selection of dates and don't let them leave untill everything is tested A1.

No idea but i moved into my new house on the 13th of August and still have no internet, still waiting for adsl to be switched on, its appauling imo, if this were a cabled area it would have been on in days. This is with Sky

I know if the cables are already there, they do just send out a self-install box for the TV. All the boxes have detailed instructions on them. I dont know about the broadband though.

When I moved into my house last year, I called and told them the previous occupant was a VM customer as all the cables etc. were still there and I just required the modem. They still sent an engineer out, which I didn't mind. He was in and out in a few minutes.
