Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Click on the search by postcode tab and you can get a breakdown there if others have done speedtests on TBB.

The mpas and councils tab if you use the filters can get a breakdown for your town too. I just checked my town and you can click between openreach/cable etc.

Virgin 1gig
But with 6 cameras streaming on the home network and 8 from my restaurant with spotify playing and a few online trading things going on.
One day I'll switch everything off and give it a proper test but I'm happy with that for now.

Cheers mrk.

Im split on what to do... I have the option of VM 1Gig for circa £39.
Or the +900Mbit FTTP with Sky circa £54.....

I mean what are the main differences going to be between VM cable and the FTTP?
Ping times? Speed of browsing etc?

You won't notice any difference in speed of browsing, streaming downloads etc, all of that is instantaneously fast. Latency once VM enable the full scope of docsis 3.1 on the upload stream will be better, but it's already good as it is anyway really. The upload stream thing as talked about earlier may well be due to go live soon I guess. Even still, in gaming you probably won't notice any difference either unless you are a competitive online gamer who needs every millisecond etc.

I don't know what the customer service for Sky is like, but VM's customer service is largely pretty crap, thankfully the service rarely goes down requiring contact with them.

FTTP is vastly superior. Latency and jitter will be much improved, plus the additional upload. Browsing might feel snappier depending on the area. Given the choice it’s hard to justify Virgin.

Cheers folks.... so I
If you can get Sky FTTP, chances are you can also get other providers as well.
You mean to try and get a better price?

And cheers to all for your responses.
Yes as was mentioned above its very much a case of "what am I getting for the extra £10-£15 per month by going FTTP fibre over VM.

Im not a competitive gamer by any means (gone are those days :)).

And I mean.. how much faster can browsing get honestly? It seems to be depdendent from site to site where the page just appears instantly... (like bbc) and other sites which may take a second or two to load and then pictures load after...

Why would it be £10-15 more expensive? FTTP is usually cheaper.

You’d be surprised. Quite a few on here have gone from VM to FTTP and noticed faster and more responsive browsing.
If you're in a congested/troublesome area for that ISP then sure, but this isn't exclusive to VM in some areas, this applies to all ISPs, same as phone networks too.

Hopefully a quick question now. I’m on a Superhub 2AC on the 200mb package. If I upgrade to the 500 package Virgin want to replace the Super hub with Superhub 4. Are the latency and jitter issues sufficiently resolved now so I won’t notice any detriment? I couldn’t find a definitive answer on the Virgin Media forums.

It would go straight into modem mode and connected to a mesh system anyway if that makes a difference.

Ive been quoted circa £54 for Sky for the 900mbit and £39 for VM 1Gbit.

But by all means if you could point the way to somewhere cheaper for FTTP Im all for it!

Where did VM quote you £39 for VM 1Gb?

That aside I'd really recommend going FTTP, have a look at Aquiss' FTTP their pricing is quite competitive - half price for 6 months offer on atm.

Retentions. They offered me £33 for 500Mbit or £39 for 1Gbit.
I was on the £33 500Mbit but I cancelled in the cooling off period and reverted back to the original package temporarily until Open reach come round to connect me up and check to see how the connection stacks up on FTTP.

Based on the offer from Aquiss, its over £100 cheaper via VM....

Nice. Tbh if you're not bothered about better pings or reliability so much, VM haven't been that bad for me really where I live. But I do notice the increased ping times and browsing not feeling as snappy, compared to a relative's FTTP I've used.

But I'd pay a few quid more to not be on VM and have true FTTP personally, as would a fair few others. Depends on your priorities and expectations however.

I mean. ping times vary between 9 to 14ms for me on my PC.. is this ok?

I think what I will do is wait for Open reach to come round... because the things is.. Ive never see any works done around my area yet it seems I do have FTTP in this area according to the online checker...
