Virgin Media Discussion Thread

had an engineer booked for today, but the internet came back on about 4/5 hours after my last post, so I cancelled it last night.
Internet has just gone down for the 3rd time since installation on Feb 17th.
that's quote a few times considering when it was installed.

Does rebooting it sort the issue out or does it just come back on at some point?

I need to give virgin a call tomorrow, contract ends on the 9th May.

Currently paying £67.45 for M250 boosted to M350, Mega Tv and a landline that never ever gets used in fact its not plugged in. Another blow is Virgin Media are the fastest in my area no FTTP on my side of the street :( but 50metres away its all FTTP. Openreach dont have any plans to extend to my side yet due to it being all underground.

1st time was the 1st night it was installed. I faffed about resetting the router etc, it was late went to bed, was working in the morning.
2nd time was Friday, did same again, contacted VM had engineer booked for Monday, it came back on 4 hours later
This time contacted VM again, they sent "a signal" to my router, I rebooted and it came back on, so took about 30/40m to sort out.

hopefully it settles down, if it goes down again, regardless of if it comes back up still keep the engineer booked in so he can take a look.

I pay £27pm for M250 which goes up in April to £31pm. My contract is due to expire in June.

Anyway Virgin Sales India phoned me today and said in light of April's price rise and imminent contract expiry, they would offer me M500 for £36 (so double the speed for a £5 increase). I said I wasn't interested but I would be willing to look at Gigabit broadband. She spoke to her manager then came back to me and said they could do it for £37pm. I hummed and arred, then said I would do the deal if they throw in an O2 sim. She went to speak to her manager again and then came back and said they could do a 6gb sim (I currently pay £11pm for my Tesco sim which is out of contract).

So as a result I've gone from M250 to 1gb broadband, along with a sim and I'm £4pm better off ! In addition to which they are sending me wifi boosters and I will get Amazon prime and all that stuff :)

Does the Hub 5x report the PON status in the UI, or are there lights on the front of the box? It sounds like your light levels might be borderline and they drop below spec and the connection goes, if that's the case then nothing other than an engineer inspecting the joints/splits is going to fix it.

The Hub 5x UI is very "thin", I have mine in modem mode anyway so there is even less info.
And just to clarify I did try resetting the router to see if that would make a difference but it didn't.

Yeh I was thinking the same tbh.

Ideally I would have them move the box but don't fancy a cable running all the way around my house to the new position.
I have the optical terminal from Virgin by the front door, but all my network stuff is in a cabinet the other side of the house, when I had a BT line it was easy as I have installed ethernet near the front door, so just had a cable from the BT box straight into the ethernet I installed, but with virgin I have to have their router by the front door.

Can you convert optical > ethernet then ethernet>optical at the other end without loss of signal or causing any problems ?

Obviously that in itself won't fix your issue, but it gives you another potential way of doing things.

Well called Virgin, told to call back on or around the 1st April as our contract will end in May 9th.

Got me thinking the Virgin media account is in the other halfs name. Could we say we are leaving and I join again but in my name? Any one got experience with do this?

I just quickly checked virgins new prices there, M362 + 200 channels and sky sports mix for £55 for new customers or with movies instead for £45.. I only have 1gig from the, my out of contract cost was going to be £62. Did the check online for new customerrs, £33. Phoned cancellations, asked for the new customer price. They said no, I said cancel please, 15 mins later got text with number to call with the £33 offer..

If that doesn't work, cancel and sign up as new customer.

PS loving the Veep reference :)

I think in April, I'll call them ask for a new customer deal I have found for £53 (1gig, Mega tv 200+ channels, and a extra tv box). And if they say no I'll see what happens, which I think they will. Might cancel and make a new account in my own name to install the day after the 30 days.

How have VM managed to botch things to the point where existing customers or any address that has had coaxial in the past are locked out from ordering FTTP

So I cancelled my contract back on the 25th as I was trying to get a better deal but so far, all I've been offered is either locking in the same price that I'm on already (£26.11 for M250 boosted to M350 with VOLT) or paying £31 to go up to M500. Surely they can do better than that or are they just really stingey at the moment? I've just seen this on HUKD & I'll be signing up to that in my partners name if they don't play ball :D

Virgin never offered us anything to renew our contract and that's after 25 years of being a customer to them and the previous owner. moved to sky Gigafast 900 2 months ago for £39 and it's been excellent so far.
