Just thought I'd drop a post on here to see if anyone else has had a similar issue to this with Virgin Media broadband. A friend has the 20Mb package and was supplied with the Virgin 'Superhub' modem/router for his connection - And to cut a long story short, he can't connect to Dungeons & Dragons Online, an MMO he's played recently on Virgin and has done for a number of years. Now, he's had a new PC built and asked for my help when he started having issues in connecting to the game. For the past week or so, he's not been able to login to the game at all.

So, thinking that it could one of many local reasons why he couldn't connect I used TeamViewer to remote in to his PC and check through a whole selection of issues:

1) Disable Virgin Security Software - completely.
2) Disabled Windows firewall
3) Checked HOSTS file for bad entries
4) Checked name resolution by setting 8.8.8.8 as primary DNS
5) Set his PC's IP address as DMZ Host on the router to circumvent the router Firewall
6) UPnP is enabled, but cleared of entries when testing to begin with.

Essentially, he can't even get to the ww.ddo.com website, and the game launcher can't contact a web server to download the latest game news. It won't also contact the account management website for him to try to log in to the game via his account either.

Now, he got onto Virgin about this and was told to use there Web Proxy server under Internet Explorer - this does the trick for HTTP access to the ddo.com website, and even allows the game launcher to download latest game news and allow him to login to the game. When a sucessful login is made, the game opens up and sits there trying to connect to a 'login server' and before timing out after 20 tries.

'The Technical Bit'
I can confirm all the above pretty much through dropping Wireshark onto the connection when firing up the game launcher. With the Virgin Proxy enabled, I can see web traffic connection for game news fire up, connect and retrieve the news, and I can see an SSL connection made to a different alias on the same server IP for the account login. When the game fires up, I then see a stream of unanswered UDP packets sent to the actual game server world, with no replies incoming showing that the traffic sent is not being replied to.

After capturing two different game world log in attempts, saved off the packet captures for my mate to send them through to Virgin tech support.

'The Scam Bit'
Mate's been on the telephone to Virgin again, now there denying the problem is at there end and that he needs to subscibe to some premium software support for 6 months in order for him to receive help with resolving the problem.

So is anyone else having a related issue where they can't mysteriously connect to a game or service orn the net via Virgin?

Is anyone else being forced into paying for technical support when they can prove the issue is with Virgin and there 'behind the scenes practices'?

Has anyone gotten anywhere with sucessful complaint to some government body over this dodgy-ness?
