My mother has recently moved house, thanks to the advice here she's gone with VM for broadband. They're sending someone round to 'install' it next week, but I was just wondering exactly what that entails? I live a couple of hours away, and she's completely PC-illiterate, so will the guy hook the router up to her PC and completely sort it for her? Or is he going to fiddle with some fibre outside the house then do a runner? I'm not looking forward to a 2hr technical support call to talk her through setting up the router!

He'll set it all up so it's running and working on her machine. Run line from road, run cable in house along desired path then connect the modem up to the machine and cable. You shouldn't have to give any support.
 
Yup, make sure you get her to specify the point she wants the cable to run to (ie, which room) and how she wants it run (ie, along the skirting).
 
If they are supplying the router, they will install it and set it up. If not, they will just put the modem direct into one system and check it works.

As above, check where you want the cable to come in. It will come in from the front pavement usually (there should be a small plastic top cover circle outside each property in the pavement itself) and will be laid underground about a foot deep to the front/side of the property. They then put in a junction box on the side of the house which all TV/BB cables will then come from and go to another box in each room that has a service.

If the house had cable before, it will be quicker as they just move the cable where needed if their isn't a box in that room already.
 
Ah excellent. I forgot to say that the last owners of the house had VM so she already has the cables coming into the house (by the tv in the lounge, and an extension through to the study). Good news. When i helped her move in last weekend i even plugged all the phones in the sockets where she wanted them (also study and lounge), so they're ready to go. She's transferring her phone number from BT (old house) to VM, so i presume he'll get all her phones working too? I mean, she's taking on a VM phone and broadband package, so will she get her phoneline working at the same time, or do they do it separately?

Yep pretty sure they put the new line in the same time. Our BT line was awful so we had a VM one put in as it was the same per month.
